Colour-coded bags: a small idea that saves real site time

Site delays over the wrong bolt turning up are more common than they should be, and Andrews Fasteners set out to fix that over a century into the trade. We originated the colour coded bag system now used across the industry, and it still solves a genuine problem.

Here's how it works. Red means M12, blue is M16, yellow is M20, green is M24, black is M30. One glance tells site teams what's in the bag, no measuring, no guessing.

The bolts themselves carry diameter and length stamped directly on the head, so the right connection gets the right fastener even after the bag's been opened. Labels are weatherproof, non-tearable, and carry the batch number for full traceability, plus the order number and site phase if needed.

Everything is CE and UKCA marked to BS EN 15048 and BS EN 14399, and every batch comes with test certificates to BS EN 10204, so compliance and paperwork are sorted before the delivery even lands.

Wrong nut grade with galvanised bolts causes more rejected deliveries than most specifiers expect. Here are five things worth checking before your next order goes in.

Mixing standard-grade nuts with galvanised or sherardised set screws on CE (and UKCA) approved assemblies is a common one. Higher-grade nuts are often required to cope with the coating thickness and thread fit, so check this before assembly, not after.

Confusing HR and HV bolt assemblies trips people up too. They're both high-strength preloading systems under BS EN 14399, but the tightening methods and torque values differ, and getting it wrong affects preload accuracy.

Assuming preloaded (HSFG) assemblies can be de-assembled and reused is another. Once tensioned, they generally shouldn't be taken apart and refitted.

Overlooking DTI washers is worth a mention as well. BS EN 14399-9 direct tension indicators give a visual check on preload that torque alone won't confirm.

Traceable fasteners: what you're actually paying for

A cheaper bolt without paperwork can cost far more once it's on site. If something fails and there's no traceability, you can't prove where the steel came from, how it was tested, or whether it meets BS EN 14399 or BS EN 15048 at all.

Every fastener we supply comes with a Certificate of Conformity, and most with 3.1 Test Certificates covering full chemical and mechanical testing to BS EN 10204. CE and UKCA marked products also get a Declaration of Performance, so the paperwork matches the standard, not just the label.

Batch numbers are printed on weatherproof labels, and diameters are colour coded on site (red for M12, blue for M16, yellow for M20) so the right bolt goes into the right connection every time. Diameter and length are stamped on the bolt head too, as a second check.

Specifying the wrong bolting assembly can hold up a project long after the steel's gone up. That's why CPD in structural fastening isn't optional reading for engineers and specifiers, it's part of the job.

CE marking (paired with UKCA for GB placement) confirms a fastener meets the Construction Products Regulation. Non-preload assemblies need to comply with EN 15048-1, preload assemblies with EN 14399-1, each with its own labelling and Declaration of Performance.

Questions worth asking before you order fasteners

Not every fastener supplier will give you a straight answer about test certificates, and that's worth knowing before an order goes out, not after.

Ask whether 3.1 certificates come as standard, or only 2.2. Ask if 3.2 certification is available for projects that need independent witness testing. Ask for full traceability back to the manufacturer, not just a batch number on a delivery note.

On preloaded assemblies (BS EN 14399), ask about minimum thread length and whether the assembly has been tested to BS EN 14399-2. On non-preloaded assemblies (BS EN 15048), ask the same about BS EN 15048-2. If hot dip galvanising is involved, ask how they've accounted for thread fit given the 50-80 micron average coating thickness, and whether hydrogen embrittlement has been managed through a non-acid cleaning treatment.

Confirm the product carries CE (and UKCA) marking, with a Declaration of Conformity supplied for each order. Confirm the supplier is approved to BS EN ISO 9001 and NHSS3.
