Policies changes will not be enough, Labour's Employment Rights Act is so sweeping, it will be all about education for your managers.
So much has changed and will change in the next 12 months, and the impact on your business of getting it wrong will be great. It is really essential that your managers are fully aware of the new rules, and how to implement your policy changes.
Top areas you need to focus your management training on:
✅Changes in statutory sick pay rules means your managers need a changed focus on absence management. It is essential they understand how to record absence and manage return to work interviews to avoid absenteeism escalating out of control.
✅Probation periods following changes in unfair dismissal legislation. Do your managers understand that anyone employed now will have the right to claim unfair dismissal from 1st January 2027? Do they have the tools to assess performance and go through compliant dismissal processes?
✅Harassment and the new preventative duty. The Workers Protection Act already requires employers to take reasonable steps to prevent harassment and sexual harassment. From October the ERA strengthens the wording to make it ALL reasonable steps. Have you trained your managers and your wider team?
Other areas the law has changed in the past 18 months include handling flexible working requests, whistleblowing, expanded parental and bereavement leave to name a few.
