In 1937, my Grandad Leslie James Harris, joined Erith Urban District Council as a Probational Fireman.
In 1941, he was called up to join the National Fire Service.

National Fire Service was created to be the single fire service to combat the devastation of the Blitz, which Leslie experienced firsthand.

From 1943 to 1946, he joined the Army Fire Service (AFS) and embarked on a life-changing journey, from North Africa, to Italy to the Austrian Alps.

From the North African desert, to guarding ammunition ships in the docks of Algiers, dodging snipers in Genoa, battling sulphur fires in the Italian ports and finally ending as a Warrant Officer in the freezing conditions of the Austrian Alps.

Leslie used his Matchless G3/L motorcycle to travel between fire stations and conduct equipment inspections across Italy, maintaining it with a mechanic’s precision.

Leslie’s commitment to the service didn’t end with the war. In April 1948, he joined the newly formed Kent County Fire Brigade (KFB) as a Leading Fireman at Erith.

His expertise led him to become a Fire Instructor in 1954 at the Brigade Training School in Boughton Monchelsea, where he helped shape the next generation of firefighters.

After 26 years of active service, Leslie retired from the Kent Fire Brigade.

Ever the mechanic, he spent his final working years at the Brigade Workshop, ensuring the vehicles he loved were always ready for the “bells down”.

// Glass Plates That May Hold a Family Connection

"The plates were discovered in my parents' house when it was cleared, in a yellow box bearing my father's writing. Dating c1920.

The toddler in the picture is my father, Robert Thompson. The person holding him his mother, Florence Thompson.

The photographs were taken in Brora, Sutherland, Scotland.

The scans are excellent, and Nick was extremely helpful generally."

The photo is from my in-law's wedding in 1960 and shows my mother-in-law as the bride and her cousin as the bridesmaid.

My mother-in-law has Alzheimer's now, so recent events don't mean that much to her but she still remembers past events well, so hopefully this will be a good memory for her. It also makes an excellent gift for her cousin, who is my husband's godmother too.

"It was taken in October 1989, a year before my mum passed away. It’s very special as it was a few months before she got very ill with cancer, so this is one of the last pictures we got of us together with her looking well.

Thanks for what you’ve done it’s just like the original. I’m so pleased with it and means so much."

"The photo is of my husband as a child and his granddad, who passed away when my husband was about 17. We got the original photo when his grandma passed away last year and it was pretty sun faded.

It means a lot to my husband and usually sits on his desk. I decided to reach out to Nick to restore it for my husband’s 31st birthday present.

I feel like this is a very personal gift, taking a pretty much irreplaceable item and restoring it feels like a one of a kind gift, to be cherished for many more years to come."

1981 British Airways Stewardess ✈️

"It's a photo of me which mum had before she passed 18 months ago. I was a stewardess with British Airways. Taken around 1981 I believe, hence the fading. The result is wonderful."

Restored Photo Sent Across the World to Solve a Family Mystery

"I got this picture restored because I BELIEVED it was my father... But the original was too unclear to be sure.

One of his cousins thinks it's him… But the other thought it might actually be his twin brother.

I sent the photo to his twin, but he's lived in Australia for over 55 years and has only written home half a dozen times since he left… So I didn’t hold my breath for a reply.

Weeks later, a message arrived...He confirmed it IS my father!"

"It was taken on 3rd May 1996 at the Cardiff University Athletic Ball.  It was the first black tie event that I went to with Richard (we had met in the February).  We've been married for 25 years now.

Truly grateful for restoring our precious moment"

The photo is of my great great grandfather who served with the 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot from 1862 to 1890 getting to be the regimental quartermaster sergeant.

The 27th (Inniskilling) Regiment of Foot was an Irish infantry unit raised in 1689. It continued in British Army service until the 1881 reforms, when it was merged into The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers.

The original photo was taken in the early 1880's and is very small and of poor quality, but Nick has done a great job bringing it to life for the family to treasure.

BILLY THE KID, c1880

Billy the Kid (Henry McCarty, born 1859), was a notorious American outlaw and gunfighter of the Old West who was linked to 9 murders.

After killing a blacksmith in August 1877, Billy the Kid became a wanted man in Arizona and fled to New Mexico.

In 1878 he took part in the Lincoln County War and was later charged with killing 3 men, including Lincoln County Sheriff, William J. Brady.

In 1881, Sheriff Garrett captured Billy the Kid and he was sentenced to be hanged. However, he escaped killing two deputies, evading capture for 2 months. Sheriff Garrett shot and killed him, aged 21.
