MILITARIA & ETHNOGRAPHICA SALE
24th June
A First World War Field Surgeon's Operating Kit by Down Brother's, Thomas Street, London, is one of the fascinating pieces of history in the sale.
Dr John Richard Larson was of Swedish descent and came to Scotland to attend The Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. He was conscripted into the army in 1916 at the age of 23 years, and it was at this time that he was presented with the above set of instruments which he used in his service (possibly with the Highland Light Infantry) as a field surgeon.
Following his discharge from the army he worked alongside his wife in Palestine as a medical missionary. He returned to England in 1927 and lived and worked as a private GP in Leicester, where his son, the vendor’s father, was born. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he enlisted and served as Captain with the Leicestershire Regiment.
