Have you seen a load of bees "swarming" around your bird box or wall vents this week? Read this before you call a beekeeper.
Local Facebook groups are absolutely flooded right now with people asking for recommendations to get rid of bees, usually asking if a local beekeeper wants them.
Here is the honest truth from a local pest controller: Beekeepers only deal with honeybees. What you are seeing at the minute is almost certainly Bombus hypnorum—the Tree Bumblebee.
They love nesting up high, which is why they constantly take over abandoned bird boxes or move into wall cavities through old, redundant overflow pipe holes.
Why does it look like they are swarming?
With the warm weather we're having, the inside of a wall cavity or a wooden bird box gets incredibly hot. When you see a massive crowd of them hovering or clumping together outside the entrance hole, they aren't swarming to attack. The colony is literally just hanging out on the porch to cool down and get some airflow into the nest.
What should you do?
In a few weeks, their natural summer cycle will be over and they will be gone completely. If they are high up or out of the way, my advice is always to just leave them alone and let them do their thing.
However, I know nature doesn’t always pick a convenient spot. If they’ve nested right next to your front door, a trampoline, or a narrow walkway where it’s a genuine safety hazard, we have options:
Relocation (The Best Option): If they are in a bird box, I can unhook the entire box and move it to a quiet, convenient corner of your garden. If you just want them gone but don't want them killed, I often relocate these boxes to my own backyard, where they can finish their cycle in peace.
Treatment (The Last Resort): If relocation isn't possible (like deep inside a wall void) and they are making it genuinely unsafe for your family to use the garden or house, I am qualified to treat and destroy the nest safely.
If you've got a busy nest and aren't sure what to do, drop me a message or a photo. I’ll always give you an honest opinion.
Here's a pic of me and the boss removing a bumblebee nest from a garden a couple of years ago. Just for the Facebook algorithm.
