Hi All,
Some of you may be aware of the newly enacted ‘Martyn’s Law’ - or as it’s officially called the Terrorism (Protection of Premises Act) 2025. This came about due to Manchester Arena terrorist attack in 2017 which claimed 22 young lives watching Ariana Grande.
At present, despite being given royal assent, none of the act has actually yet been written. However, we do know that premises which have over 200 people on their venue at only one time over a 12 month period, will have to do some security risk assessments and security management. Those who have over 800 people, will need to do as you have to with the 200 person threshold, but also consider physical security measures and register with a yet to be finalised regulator (it will be the SIA, but how it operates has not been defined yet).
So why am I telling you this? Well some organisations on here may well fit into one of these 2 levels, and you will need to do something. But, there are a lot of companies selling ‘Martyn’s law’ training and selling services to make you Martyn’s Law compliant. They are talking compete rubbish. As the Act has not been fully developed and written, there is no way they can help you unless they have some type of crystal ball.
So you what can you do in preparation?
Firstly a lot of the information and terrorism awareness training is free. You can find it at the following website: https://www.protectuk.police.uk
Also, get you and any staff / contractors / subbies to do the ACT awareness training which is available on the website above by clicking on ‘menu - learning - e-learning’ and doing the ACT Awaremess free online course - it takes about 45 minutes. This course will become mandatory later once the Act is fully in place. It’s useful to anyone, so that even ifs it only you in your business, do it. The more who do it, the more people know what to spot and how to report suspicious activity.
Please don’t go buying or spending money unnecessarily on Martyn’s Law compliance or training. If you want to speak about it, let me know. But as said, there is free advice training, so do that. Don’t pay for something which is not needed !
