Here at Comprehensive Fire and Security we are often asked many questions on the subject 'Fire Risk Assessments'. Over the next few weeks we will collate the most frequently asked questions and answer them for you to review.

Q&A
“Who is responsible for fire risk assessments at my premises?”

🔍 The problem / question: Many organisations ask: “Is it my duty as the business owner, or can I delegate it? Who is ‘responsible’?”

✅ Solution insight:
Under fire safety legislation in many jurisdictions, there must be a designated “Responsible Person” (or equivalent role) who ensures fire safety tasks are carried out.
That person doesn’t have to personally do every task—but they must ensure the work is done: assessments, implementation, ongoing review, training, record keeping.
In smaller businesses, it’s often the business owner; in larger buildings, it may be a facilities manager, appointed safety officer, or managing agent.
In multi-occupancy buildings (apartments, shared offices), each party may have responsibilities for parts of the building (common areas vs private units).

🛠 Tip for readers: Create a simple “fire safety accountability matrix” showing which roles are responsible for which tasks (assessment, review, training, record-keeping). This avoids confusion later.

For a “fire safety accountability matrix” drop your details into the below contact page and we will send you the matrix completely free of charge.
