I trained as a clinical hypnotherapist through Innervisions School of Clinical Hypnotherapy and am registered with General Hypnotherapy Register (GHR). I am also a qualified hypnoslimmer consultant and have DBS clearance. History
References to hypnosis date back to ancient Egypt and Greece, and ‘trance like states’ are referenced in many spiritual and religious writings and practices. The work hyp
nosis comes from ‘Hypnos’, the Greek God of sleep. Pioneers
Franz Mezner 1734-1815: From his work we get the term mesmerism. James Braid 1795-1860: Developed the practice of fixation on an object to induce trance, his pendulum of choice was the pocket watch. He also published a book on the phenomenon called ‘Hypnosis’. James Esdaile 1805-1859: Pioneered the use of hypnosis to relieve pain during surgery. Unfortunately ridiculed by his own professional peers and unable to promote his techniques before the introduction of Chloroform! Emile Coue 1857-1926: Developed ‘Auto-suggestion’ and ‘Affirmation technique’. He was the first person to realise the power of suggestion in hypnosis. Milton Erickson 1901-1980: An authority on clinical Hypnosis who developed and used the techniques of metaphor, confusion and humour during hypnosis. Trance like state? We often find ourselves in a trance like state – reading a book and you become immersed in the story you lose all awareness of the people/room around you; daydreaming while doing housework!! These are just two examples of your subconscious mind taking over while your conscious mind works on something else. Hypnosis is not sleep – however we regularly go into a hypnotic trance like state just before sleep (hypnogogic state) and as we begin to wake (hypnopompic state). During both your brain is in a highly suggestable state! Hypnosis? The definition of hypnosis is “a state of relaxation and heightened awareness induced by suggestion”. It is safe, natural, non-magical, and produces very predictable results. Hypnosis is a totally natural phenomenon, is very pleasant and very relaxing, and it is impossible to come to any harm. There is no question of being controlled or manipulated and you cannot be induced into a hypnotic state, or do anything during it, against your will. As a clinical hypnotherapist I simply us techniques to facilitate self-hypnosis to guide you to positive changes in behaviour; changes that you are seriously willing to make. Losing control and devolving secrets? Hypnosis is not ‘sleep’. You are often more aware than usual of what is taking place and the senses function far more efficiently than normal. Under hypnosis you will be able to hear everything I say and follow my suggestions. You, also, can converse very easily; you are in control and therefore cannot be manipulated into doing anything against your will or reveal anything you do not wish to reveal. Inability to ‘waken’ / to exit the hypnotic state? This is a common fear. As stated before you are in control. Therefore even if something happened during the session and I was not able to communicate with you, you would naturally waken yourself. You only stay in trance for as long as you need to and for as long as you felt it safe to be. Hypnotherapy will help you move in the right direction to change, and positively correct core unwanted behaviours. You will begin to understand the power of your own subconscious and have the courage to change. You will feel calm, increase your self-esteem and self-worth, you will also acquire the tools to become self-confident and self-accepting. Hypnoslimmer? Hypnotherapy works only when you are willing to be hypnotised and are serious about the changes you want to make and you are willing to make them. If this is not the case then hypnosis will not work. Are you willing to be hypnotised? Are you serious about making changes? Are you willing to make the changes? If you can say yes to all three of these questions then I can help you to do it.
