In 5 days, the New IPM 2026 Future Food Systems symposium will kick off.

The event will be attended by experts from across the industry, including researchers, farmers, investors, academics, business leaders, and our very own Pest Research Hub team. Acting as representatives will be Dr Sam Jones and Meghan Harrison-Murray, who will host a discussion about the PRH team's work.

📍 Hosted at Swansea University, Bay Campus, Wales and running from 9:00 am Sep 08th to the 10th

The symposium will be a significant opportunity for networking and discussion among those who are making the decisions for food tech systems in the UK, into the future. It is where approaches to managing, developing and protecting our food systems will be discussed.

Artificial solutions to your gardening woes can rarely match up to the effectiveness of natural solutions. That's why today we wanted to promote several plants you can add to your garden to encourage pollinators to support your garden.

1) 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗶𝘂𝗺 - Blooming from mid-summer to October, these highly accessible plants with large open flowers for landing provide an excellent food source to cover the latter months of summer when other plants are beginning to fade.

2) 𝗟𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿 - Aromatic and effective even in dry, poor soil, these plants naturally attract a lot of bee species and provide regular access to food.

3) 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿 - A fantastic summer bloomer that supports a wide range of pollinator species.

4) 𝗬𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄 - These flat-topped flowers produce an abundance of nectar and pollen for mason bees, hummingbirds, hoverflies, moths, honey bees and butterflies.

Just recently, The Royal Entomological Society began a landmark research project into understanding the changing needs of some of our rarest insects and plants to prevent their extinction. Funded by Natural England and The Crown Estate, they hope to learn how to combat the increasing loss of biodiversity in the UK.

Hedgehogs naturally prey on a variety of pests and are easy to support in the garden, making supporting them a win-win.

Making the following changes to your garden can really help to keep yours healthy:
1 - Provide a shallow body of water with a ramp for easy access to escape in case the hedgehog, or other wildlife, falls in.
2 - Leave patches of long grass for them to hide in and use as shelter.
3 - Provide a space for compost or fallen leaves to collect so hedgehogs can use these piles for homes.

If you want your garden to be livelier, plant catmint flowers.

The varieties of catmint are fantastic for being hardy, drought-resistant, and rich in nectar for pollinators. A patch of catmint provides your garden with a reliable place for solitary bees, moths, honeybees and butterflies to feed.

Reliably flowering from April into summer, catmint plants are very effective in attracting these insects to the garden. They will then, in turn, help to pollinate your flowers and maintain a healthy cooperative system of insects and flowers.

Adding resting spots, shallow pools of water, and nooks or small openings for shelter will also encourage an environment for useful insects. Helping to keep your garden in great health.
