Beyond Compliance: Strategic Fire Prevention for Modern Port Leaders

Port operations are entering a new era of risk. As global supply chains integrate lithium-ion logistics, alternative fuels, and increasingly complex bulk commodities, the standard "box-ticking" approach to fire safety is no longer sufficient to protect assets or personnel. At Portia, we believe fire prevention is a commercial necessity and a critical component of the ship-to-shore interface.

We are pleased to announce the launch of our new Strategic Fire Prevention and Management in Ports Programme.

This two-day intensive course is designed specifically for port supervisors, managers, and H&S professionals who require high-level oversight of complex, high-hazard maritime environments. Built upon global benchmarks - including SOLAS, the IMDG/IMSBC Codes, and ILO guidelines - the curriculum moves beyond basic theory to address the "ground truth" of modern port operations.

Instead of standard fire drills, participants will explore the technical science of emerging risks and the psychological pre-conditions that lead to the failure of established controls. This is about providing your leadership team with a strategic "shield" to ensure global supply chain continuity and asset protection.

To maintain the competitive integrity of this specialist curriculum, the full syllabus is available upon request.

Contact the Portia team today to discuss how we can customise this programme for your facility.

Today Portia attended the Women in Ports Reception hosted by Port Skills and Safety (PSS) at Trinity House as part of the London International Shipping Week programme.

This was such a well-attended event and a varied range of speakers showcased their success stories and how as role models they could mentor females to flourish under the Women in Ports Mentoring Programme.

PSS said that there had been a large uptake of attendees signing up as Mentors and/or Mentees and encouraged others to register for this exciting new programme which is sponsored by Associated British Ports, Forth Ports, Port of London Authority and Peel Ports.

Maputo Ports Delegation Visit the Port of Liverpool.

Portia and Peel Ports were delighted to host a delegation from the Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office(FCDO) during a 2-day visit to the Port and City of Liverpool. MPDC delegates were in the UK as part of the London International Shipping Week and on their fact finding mission in the Port of Liverpool, they visited a number of terminals including Biomass, T1 and T2 Container Terminals.

MPDC delegates discussed a range of topics including digitalisation, automation, civil engineering, labour allocation and vessel mooring. Additional discussions centred around institutional capacity building and strengthening internal capabilities, especially in operational management. Portia would like to thank Peel Ports Group for supporting this successful visit and in particular Damian Cross (Head of Containers Technology and Automation Strategy) and Paul Elliot (IT Manager) for their sterling efforts.

On 4 August 2020 the city of Beirut was rocked by an enormous blast as hundreds of tonnes of ammonium nitrate stored in the Port of Beirut exploded. It was one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever recorded, killing more than 200 people, wounding thousands, and devastating swathes of Beirut.

5-years on from this devastating blast, Portia remembers all the people affected by this disaster but especially those colleagues from our partners at Beirut Container Terminal Consortium that went to work that day but never made it home.

TOC Europe 2025

Portia had a great day at TOC Europe 2025 held at the Ahoy Centre in Rotterdam. It was good catching up with some long-standing industry colleagues, seeing some interesting presentations/panel discussions at Tech TOC and the Safety Village and making some good new contacts.

You know how much of a Maritime Hub Rotterdam is when a heavy lift vessel like this is berthed outside your hotel. For comparision we have also included a photo of a slightly older vessel berthed at the Rotterdam Maritime Museum……

We hope to see you again at TOC Europe in 2026.

Portia Attends the Port Skills and Safety (PSS) Conference in Belfast.

This week, Portia attended the latest PSS Innovation in Ports Conference and the Port Safety Group (PSG) meeting in Belfast hosted by Belfast Harbour Commissioners (BHC) in the beautiful BHC Office.

Both the events were well attended and members were treated to a full programme of interesting presentations on innovations followed by a trip on and on the Electric Hydrofoil Workboat (EFoiler propulsion) developed by Artemis Technologies. On the PSG day there was an interactive workshop which covered all aspects of safety management and informative boat tour of the Port of Belfast hosted by BHC.

Thanks to Debbie, Jen and Angela and the rest of the PSS team along with the Belfast Harbour Commission and all participants and companies presenting for an extremely interesting and thought-provoking 2-days.
