When a 20+ year old boiler plays up, 9/10 times an engineer will tell you it needs replacing. And if money permits £2500-£3500 depending on what you go for and location of installation. Sometimes the gas supply pipe may need upgrading or a new boiler needs somewhere for the condensate to go. So there are things to consider and not as simple as a quick swap.

This particular boiler had a weird fault whereby it wasn’t conforming to what it should have been doing with the fault that was occurring. Also when I first went, the fault wasn’t occurring at all. The dreaded intermittent fault!

Nonetheless my diagnosis was a replacement ignition board. Now I always offer customers a choice of brand new from the manufacturer or a professionally refurbished part. A refurb board was ordered and installed and the fault continued. Long story short, the refurb board had the same fault. 3 times in 6 years this has happened and it’s just an unfortunate thing.

But nonetheless the boiler is working and lives another day, or in my opinion another 10 years. Older standard efficiency boilers were built to last. They’re not subject to the same conditions as a modern condensing boiler.

Ideal Logic Injectors

Vinegar bath for Logic injectors. Stick them in whilst you flush the hex. They then cleaned up like new with a soft scotch pad.
Clean the inside with a straw brush and rinse 💪🏽 ✨

Ideal Logic CODE Combi

Good tip to enable the hex to get rinsed through on the CODE COMBI. You just need to encourage the rear hose back a bit and the burner will lift up ok but doesn’t want to come out.

It will wedge there quite nicely. Not a perfect solution but definitely gets the job done 👍🏼

IDEAL Logic cracked sump

Fairly common on logic. If ignored it will subsequently cause rusting that will eat the cabinet and write off the boiler.

A simple annual service can spot faults like this so they can be repaired. A repair is always cheaper than a new boiler by a mile. Don’t be fooled in to replacing your boiler just because an installer can sell you a new one.

A 20 year old Vaillant Turbomax. Another little gem of a boiler that does the job without any hiccups.

I keep the burner chamber and assembly spotless every year. No signs of the heat exchanger leaking. Another one that owes the house nothing and will likely give years of trouble free heating and hot water.
