Almost 30 years ago — give or take a month — I started here.

I was 18 years old when I arrived at the CITB college at Bircham Newton to begin a Civil Engineering course, sponsored at the time by Tarmac Civil Engineering.

I revisited last week, and it brought back a lot of memories.

In the nearly 30 years since, my career in construction has taken me to places I could never have imagined back then. I’ve worked with some great people, been involved in some landmark projects across the UK, and eventually found myself doing something different from where I thought that first step would lead.

And even after nearly 30 years in employement, I’m still learning.

So why post this now?

Around this time of year, young people are getting their A-level results and others will be picking up their GCSE results this week.

I started A-levels at school, but I never finished them. They simply weren’t for me. I left school with five GCSEs and took a different route.

It certainly wasn’t the pathway I had pictured when I started my A-levels, but looking back nearly 30 years later, it hasn't turned out too badly.

So if your results aren’t what you hoped for, try not to think they define what happens next.

There are lots of different routes into a career and sometimes the path you didn’t plan turns out to be the right one.

Mine did - and yours can too.

Whilst I’ve been singing the praises of PQS Pre-Qualification-Scheme for some time, even they managed to surprise me yesterday.

On Friday morning, I received a call from a client:

Client: “I know you’ve been chasing us for some time for the documents needed to renew our Safety Schemes in Procurement (SSIP) Ltd assessment, but we have a tender to submit next Thursday. How quickly can we get it sorted?”

Me: “PQS offers a 24-hour turnaround, so get the information to me as quickly as possible and I’ll see what I can do.”

The required documents arrived late on Monday afternoon. I reviewed everything, uploaded the evidence and submitted the assessment on Monday evening.

At 12:36pm on Tuesday, my client received an email from PQS congratulating them on successfully passing the assessment, together with their new certificate.

Assuming the PQS office opened at 9:00am, they had reviewed the documents, approved the assessment and issued the certification in just over three and a half hours.

Yes, my client paid a premium for the 24-hour turnaround service, but the actual turnaround was considerably quicker and the overall cost was still significantly lower than the fees charged by several other SSIP assessment bodies.

Most importantly, the client now has the certification needed to submit their tender on time.

A fantastic service from PQS and another example of why I continue to recommend them to contractors looking for a straightforward, responsive and cost-effective SSIP assessment.

A nice bit of news to finish off the week.

🌍 Earth Day feels like a good time to reflect on some of the changes we’ve been making at Jones HSEPM Ltd over the last few years.

As the business has grown, so has the amount of travel — site visits, client meetings, and projects across the UK.

During that time, we’ve been gradually investing in electric vehicles as part of how we operate.

This hasn’t been a quick switch or a tick-box exercise — it’s been a steady move towards:
✔ reducing our environmental impact
✔ improving efficiency as fuel costs continue to fluctuate
✔ aligning with the expectations of the clients and sectors we work within

There’s still more to do, but it’s a positive step in the right direction as we continue to grow.
