I put a lot of value on a well crafted knife. Knives (and axes too) have an intrinsic beauty in their nature that seems to allude to a forgotten age of man when they played a much more prominent role in our daily lives. Much in the same way we may find ourselves captivated for hours looking into the heart of a warm glowing fire.
Beyond being simply a beautifully crafted item, a good knife should have a well polished edge, after all there is nothing quite like the satisfaction of a well honed blade gliding easily in your hand as you prepare your dinner.
Whether you prepare your food with a handmade work of art or a plastic handled tenner piece from the supermarket, neither will stay sharp forever. We all reach the point in time when the corroded, blunt and ever more frustrating (and dangerous) piece of metal that once served us so well as a kitchen knife has now reached what could be the end of its working life.
We live in an age where it has become far easier and much cheaper to replace seemingly worn out things than it is to have them repaired. As convenient as it may be to drop one knife in the bin as you drop a new one into your shopping trolley this is an immensely sad state of affairs. A good knife could easily last you a lifetime, allowing that it will need to be sharpened many times along the way.
I appreciate that it may seem a waste of money to pay someone like me to work your knife back to a razors edge when it could so easily be replaced for half the cost, but perhaps it is time we began to move back to ways of living that bring back the value of the things we own. When we choose to value the things in our life and move away from single-use living we take a simultaneous step towards being a human being again, a member of a community of people with a variety of important skills, and not simply a mindless consumer.
I would love to give your blunt old kitchen knife a whole new lease of life, in fact I will probably give it the sharpest edge it has ever ever had. Give me a shout, I'll be happy to help :)
