Fire Safety tips for the New Year!

The beginning of a new year is a great time for businesses to ensure that their fire safety
precautions are in order. Here are some tips to help your business and employees stay safe
from fire and keep you compliant with fire safety legislation:

1. Plan your next emergency evacuation test to make sure that your employees are
reminded of the correct procedures to follow and to highlight any issues which you may
need to address.

2. Ensure that regular inspections of your fire safety precautions (including fire doors,
portable extinguishers and final exit doors) are included within your routine health and
safety inspections to ensure that any defects are noted early and can be remedied
before they become a real safety issue.

3. Check to make sure that routine servicing and maintenance of your fire alarm and
emergency lighting systems are planned into your business diary for the coming year.
Fire alarms are usually serviced six monthly and emergency lighting systems annually.

4. Finally, make sure that your fire risk assessment is up to date and that any issues
highlighted within it are being managed effectively. Your fire risk assessment, which is a
legal requirement, should form the foundation for your approach to fire safety within
your premises.

Does your business have a Fire Risk Assessment?

Every business in the UK with premises needs a Fire Risk Assessment, regardless of size or number of employees. This is a legal requirement under the Fire Safety (Scotland) Act 2005 for business premises in Scotland, and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 which applies in England and Wales.

Under Fire Safety Legislation, if you are responsible for a building, for example an employer, owner or occupier of premises that aren't a 'single private dwelling' (a private home), you need to make sure a suitably competent person completes a Fire Risk Assessment. You are also required to ensure that the Fire Risk Assessment is kept up to date.

Failure to undertake a Fire Risk Assessment may lead to proceedings being taken against you by the enforcing authority (usually the local Fire Authority).
