"Cartier and the Arts of Islam" exhibition at the Musée des Arts décoratifs, Paris

This major exhibition traces Islamic art’s influence on the objects created by Louis Cartier and the designers of the great French jewelry Maison from the early 20th century to today. The exhibition explores how Cartier’s designers adapted forms and techniques from Islamic art, architecture, and jewelry, as well as materials from India, Iran and the Arab lands, synthesizing them into a modern stylistic language unique to the house of Cartier.

Co-organized by the Dallas Museum of Art and the Museé des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, in partnership with the Maison Cartier, Cartier and Islamic Art presents over 400 objects from major international collections, including the Department of Islamic Arts at the Louvre Museum and the Keir Collection of Islamic Art on loan to the Dallas Museum of Art.

Hedge funds had their heyday before the global financial crisis in 2008, but things could finally be looking up for the asset class. A new paper from Peltz International points to signs that hedge funds are rebounding and questions whether hedge funds are now able to return to their glory days.

According to Peltz, investor confidence has returned due to strong hedge fund performance over the last 18 months. Funds recorded an 11.6% return last year due mostly to the strong performance in the last nine months of the year. In fact, 2020 brought their best return in a decade despite the ongoing pandemic. This year, hedge funds were already up by approximately 10% through the end of August.

Some of the growth in hedge funds is due to them investing in cryptocurrencies and private investments. That makes it hard to believe that money is flowing into relative value and other traditional hedge fund strategies.

The COVID-19 pandemic has displayed the health care technology industry’s ability to flex in the face of a towering global challenge. The virus’s genome structure was mapped within weeks and vaccines rolled out less than a year after its existence was first confirmed. Since then, billions of people around the world have been vaccinated.

The pandemic fundamentally changed the industry in the process. Investing in the industry and innovation historically required patience and took years, but COVID-19 made accelerated innovation a necessity.

That forced a paradigm shift in the health care industry, which had a cultural clash with the tech industry’s move-fast-and-break-things ethos.

That paradigm shift is an ongoing process, however.

Those fundamental shifts will continue to affect the industry even after the pandemic eventually recedes.
