explorations via : Jane Birkin’s fashion heritage begins with her most iconic accessory: the basket. This famous Portuguese basket, she had bought in a market in the 60s. "It has never left me," she told Vogue. And that's saying something: the rustic bag with followed her in Parisian supermarkets, in her crazy outings with Serge and even on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival (embellished for the occasion with a scarf in silk). An accomplice accessory, her braided tote also accompanied her to the Parisian bistro Maxim's, where she used it to subtly steal silver cutlery. The story of Jane and her basket, however, didn’t end well. In the early 1980s, her then-companion, Jacques Doillon, savagely crushed Jane's much-loved bag as he was backing up with his car, destroying it for good.
