🏀 A Vibe Like No Other at the Black in Sport Summit! 🎉

Last Saturday, Ladi had the pleasure of attending the Black in Sport Summit and let me tell you, the energy in the room was electric! ⚡️ Organised by a powerhouse group of Loughborough University alumni, all with deep roots in the sports industry, the event brought together an inspiring crowd of young adults eager to carve out their space in the business of sport. 🚀

From media and production to governance, administration, and the commercial side of sports, it was an incredible deep dive into the industry. While football dominated the discussions, the summit went far beyond the pitch. The panels explored everything from media rights to the creative industry, and the fusion of sports culture, apparel, and innovation.

Some of the standout voices included the Creative Director at Stormzy & group, Eni Aluko Ex England International Footballer and the 1st black woman football team owner, Akua Agyemfra, and the Sales Director, John Williams of a rising sports brand 'ON' all sharing their insights on how to bridge the gap between sport, creativity, and culture. 🎨⚽️

The energy from these young trailblazers was LOUD and infectious. 🗣️ The event was supported by organisations like Wings, On, Black Golfers Association and Octagon Sports, with lots of networking and conversation around shaping the future of sports content and business.

This summit wasn’t just about inspiration, it was about action. It’s clear that these young adults are going to be the next generation of industry leaders, creators, and innovators. We can’t wait to see what they do next and as consumers, we’ll be enjoying the incredible content and innovations they’ll bring to the table.

As AKD it's important that we keep abreast of innovation and creativity in this industry. We support organisations to become better by giving our expert advise and lived experiences.

Let’s keep this momentum going! What’s everyone doing to stay ahead in the game?

🎤 Lights, Camera, Action! 🎬

Last Tuesday, Ladi had the privilege of attending the launch of the BCOMS Academy and Masterclass Series, and WOW, what an event! 🤩 If you're passionate about sports media and looking to break into the industry, this is the place to be.

This programme offers an incredible opportunity for the lucky individuals who’ve been accepted via an application process. Whether you're an aspiring journalist, content creator, producer, or editor, there’s something for everyone, whether you're aiming to work in front of the camera or behind the scenes.

What makes this programme even more exciting? The BCOMS team, led by the dynamic Andrew Ducille and Jack Badu, have built partnerships with some of the biggest names in the game—think IMG, Premiership league Productions, Sky Sports, News International Group, Google, and Nike, to name a few. 🎥✨

And it gets even better, opportunities to connect with Arsenal, Chelsea, and other major football clubs are in action, opening doors for young adults to jump into careers as sports reporters, journalists, commentators, and behind-the-scenes creatives.

Now in its fifth year, the Masterclass programme has expanded to both the North and South of the UK, and the board has expanded to include new members from diverse industries such as: tech, finance and media.

The future of sports media is looking bright, and BCOMS is leading the way in nurturing the next generation of diverse, talented professionals. 🌟

It's important that we keep the conversation going because stories through a diverse lens leads to greater understanding from a rounded perspective.

When he's not racing around the world you can find Ladi racing around to some of the hottest events in the city.

Last weekend, Ladi attended the Equals Awards 2024. This annual event celebrates and uplifts the amazing work happening within ethnically and culturally diverse communities in the sports and physical activity industry, from grassroots level right up to high performance.

Some standout moments include:

Watching Kai Hockley, a young Black sailor winning Young Sportsperson of the Year ⛵️💨

Witnessing the legendary Linford Christie receive a well-deserved Lifetime Achievement Award—his impact speaks for itself 🏅👏.

And, most importantly, seeing a room FULL of Black and Brown faces, from every level and area of sport, coming together to celebrate and uplift one another.

If you were in attendance, what were your highlights? Let us know in the comments below!

This weekend you can find us at the Black In Sport Summit on Saturday 12th October. If you're attending let us know and if you see Ladi say 'hi' ... he's hard to miss

Have an amazing weekend everyone and we'll see you next week.

EDI professionals we hear you.

In recent times, the focus on inclusion has become increasingly central for organisations and although the advantages of inclusive practices are widely acknowledged many organisations encounter significant obstacles in creating truly inclusive environments.

At the upcoming AKD EDI Peer Networking Forum, we'll explore the key challenges of fostering inclusion, with a particular focus on the structural, cultural, and operational barriers that often impede progress. We’ll discuss issues such as resistance to change in some organisational cultures, where EDI efforts are often seen as secondary to traditional performance metrics; implicit biases and a general lack of awareness; insufficient training and resources; and the ongoing challenge of ensuring that inclusion permeates every level of an organisation, from leadership to daily interactions.

Achieving this requires sustained commitment and alignment with broader organisational goals.

The next forum is on Tuesday 5 Nov from 10-11am. We'd love to have you there so please use the link below to register.

We had an idea 💡

With Black History Month approaching in October we wanted to mark it in AKD style. We understand the significance of Black History Month in honouring the past, educating the present, and inspiring the future for all and what better way to do that than through sparking conversations.

This is why we have launched a Black History edition of Equally Yours, our innovative learning experience that combines playfulness and conversation. This learning experience is a innovative way of boosting cultural competence throughout your organisation.

Should we care about Black History Month?

Understanding and appreciating the history and culture of different communities creates allyship. This allyship creates a culture of people who consciously and actively value others. We all want to be valued, especially in the organisations that we work in.

We also recognise that many organisations either start focusing on Black History Month too late or avoid, overlook, or forget to celebrate it due to a lack of awareness, competing priorities, limited resources, lack of diverse leadership, or cultural inertia.

To help organisations address this we have created our Black History edition of Equally Yours, our innovative learning experience that combines playfulness and conversation, inclusive for all people. The session will educate staff about the history, struggles, and contributions of Black individuals and pioneers which in turn will enhance cultural awareness and sensitivity.

It will increase cultural competence throughout your organisation, most importantly, it will provide a sense of belonging as all your colleagues will feel valued and included.

Why do we have to wait another 4 years?

Throughout the week, we have been reflecting on the Paralympics and how inspirational it has been. During every meeting it was on in the background acting as a source of motivation.

At AKD, our core belief is that all individuals have brilliance within them and that our role is to stimulate or spark that brilliance. That spark can take many different forms, a word of encouragement, or simply witnessing other people do brilliant and remarkable things. The Paralympics was just this, remarkable people doing remarkable things.

The Paralympics showcased the remarkable beauty of achievement through the efforts of athletes overcoming various challenges. It highlighted the fruits of rigorous training, sacrifice, and perseverance, offering powerful lessons in resilience and attitude.

It’s truly one of the most inspiring sporting events, and it’s frustrating that we have to wait until 2028 to witness these amazing athletes in action again. Four years is just not good enough!

What are your thoughts?

What would you do? How would you feel answering challenging questions like this? It feels uncomfortable doesn't it? But growth doesn't come from a place of comfort.

Our Equally Yours learning experience combines playfulness and conversation to enable people to have a voice, explore scenarios, and hear about the lived experiences of others. We have launched a Black History version on Equally Yours with the aim to help you gain a deeper understanding of stereotypes, prejudice, and perceptions, especially through the “I Dare You” statements.

The Equally Yours Black History session will educate staff about the history, struggles, and contributions of Black individuals and pioneers which in turn will increase cultural competence throughout your organisation. Most importantly, it will provide a sense of belonging as all your colleagues will feel valued and included.

For the Olympics, it's been a long road to gender equality. Paris 2024 is the first Olympic Games in history with full gender parity on the field of play. Paris hosted 10,500 athletes, with just as many women as men.

It's taken until 2024 for this to happen. Even in the 2012 Games in London, there were only 44% female athletes and it's taken 3 Olympics cycles to move the needle on this. Progress has happened mainly driven by the Olympic Agenda 2020, which clearly positioned gender equality as a priority on and off the field of play.

We are still not there yet though as significant progress is still needed in areas such as coaching, sports governance and broadcasting. It does go to show that when a conscious effort is made, progress can be achieved a lot faster. This is something that needs to be kept in mind for all forms of equality, diversity and inclusion. To make an impact everyone needs to think EDI is a priority.
