Brussels has signalled a clear willingness to re-engage with the UK, with EU finance commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis saying the bloc is “open-minded” about closer trade ties, including potential talks on a customs union, if Britain wishes to explore them. After meetings with Chancellor Rachel Reeves, he said the EU was ready to engage on removing most food checks, advancing youth mobility, and reopening discussions on defence cooperation, reflecting the strongest indication yet that both sides see deeper cooperation as increasingly important amid global economic and geopolitical uncertainty.

UK GDP grew by 0.3 percent in November, beating expectations and rebounding from October’s dip, driven by stronger industrial output and a pickup in services after Jaguar Land Rover resumed production and Budget uncertainty eased. Economists welcomed the improvement but said growth remains modest, with construction still weak and some warning the rebound may be temporary, even as momentum is expected to carry into early 2026.

Britain’s leading scientist, Sir Paul Nurse, warns that high visa fees are driving young researchers away and putting the country’s scientific future at risk. While supporters say the costs help fund the NHS and reflect public concerns, Sir Paul argues that rival nations are welcoming the very talent the UK needs, and that adding financial hurdles makes no sense for a fragile science sector already facing funding pressures. He urges the government to rethink a system that burdens researchers with heavy charges and savings requirements, especially when the number of incoming scientists is too small to affect overall migration figures.

The world’s largest offshore wind farm, Dogger Bank, is set to contribute over £6 billion to the UK economy throughout its lifetime, according to a new report by BVG Associates. Once fully operational, Dogger Bank’s three phases will deliver 3.6GW of clean energy, powering millions of homes, businesses, and industries while creating thousands of local jobs over the next three decades. The report, commissioned by project partners SSE, Equinor, and Vargronn, highlights the significant impact of investment in UK companies, employment, and skills, with 3,600 full-time jobs expected by 2025, including 1,500 in the North-East, North Yorkshire, and East Riding of Yorkshire. Beyond energy and economic growth, the project will invest an additional £26 million into local communities, funding STEM education and grassroots initiatives, including scholarships for students in East Riding, Redcar and Cleveland, and South Tyneside. As Energy Minister Michael Shanks noted, clean, homegrown wind power represents “the economic opportunity of the 21st century,” driving both sustainability and long-term prosperity for the UK.

Barclays’ new report reveals that if UK SMEs invested at the same rate as larger companies, it could unlock £60bn of new investment annually. Despite record business investment levels in 2024 and continued growth in 2025, SMEs still lag behind, even though they account for 60% of employment and over half of national turnover. With over half of SMEs planning to increase investment in the next year, Barclays highlights the need for stronger confidence, practical tools, and supportive policies to help SMEs scale their investment and unlock transformational growth for the UK economy.

Inflation hits a 10-month high at 3% in January, driven by rising costs in air fares, food, and private school fees. Despite the Bank of England’s target of 2%, the road ahead looks bumpy, with everyday items now 3% more expensive than last year. As Chancellor Rachel Reeves focuses on economic growth, opposition parties critique her approach. This uptick, particularly in food prices, which soared from 1.9% to 3.1%, signals a tough time ahead for consumers.

After two months of contraction, the UK economy marginally returned to growth in November with a 0.1% increase in GDP, although this was below the expected 0.2% growth. The Office for National Statistics indicated that sectors like pubs, restaurants, IT, and construction saw growth, but this was counterbalanced by declines in manufacturing, oil and gas extraction, and the accountancy and business rental sectors. Despite the government’s focus on economic expansion, overall growth remains sluggish, and the economy is described as “broadly flat.” This tepid growth is occurring amid concerns of rising costs and potential stagflation, with significant implications for future economic policy and consumer spending.

Although inflation here has slowed, the Bank of England is still expected to raise rates at least once more - and they may stay high for longer than in the EU or US . But there's a price.

Growth may have flatlined but consumer spending has held up better - those higher wages and pandemic savings again. It was actually the Eurozone which slipped into recession over the early part of this year.
