Freelancing can be a rollercoaster, and the lumpy nature of income can make it hard to plan. Here are 5 tactics you can adopt today to help smooth the ride:

1: Consistent outreach. Don’t wait for work to dry up before reaching out to new clients. Have a list of target clients and chip away at cold outreach, sharing targeted work and building trust.

2: Client retention. Nurture existing relationships to keep yourself front of mind: share relevant new work, congratulate them on their wins, and remind them of the value you bring.

3: Financial planning. Know what you need to make per month to break even. Be honest about your personal and business outgoings, including what to put aside for tax, pensions and personal savings. Adjust your rates if you need to.

4: Diversify your income streams. Can you offer additional services to your core skills; brand partnerships and collaborations; sell prints or digital products; teach workshops or online courses?

5: Have a strategy and review it regularly. Strategies are not just for Jan 1st, they are year-long and career-long. Have a specific, tangible goal in mind and plan out the steps to get there. It may not be a simple, direct path but breaking it down into achievable steps will give you the clarity, confidence and accountability to get there.
