There is a general disconnect between the traditional sector and the technology ecosystem. It is more pronounced in a business environment such as in Tunisia, where there are many traditional businesses, such as within agri-food and textiles, many of which are family run concerns.

As part of our programme’s Upgrade Tunisia initiative, in association with our partners at Tetra Tech International Development Services, Technopole Sfax and British Embassy Tunis, we are aiming to increase innovative technologies and work practices within the traditional Tunisian manufacturing sectors using technologies and / or talent that is already present in Tunisia.

For Ruspina Huile d'olive in our agri-food cohort and MAHDCO and ETC in the textile cohort, our team of tech specialists both within the UK and in Tunisia oversaw the implementation, tech scouting and proof of concept for these businesses. This provided them with a long-term ambition to prove added value of integrating such innovation into traditional sectors and create a working relationship between them and the hi-tech sector within Tunisia.

Last Friday, April 22nd the world celebrated World Earth Day to demonstrate support for environmental protection.

For World Earth Day our programme, in our latest blog article featuring WaterSec, discussed water consumption globally, the specific impacts it is having within Tunisia and what businesses and consumers can do to significantly reduce their water usage. We also explored the wider issue this is having on our environment and how an innovation, like the one WaterSec is bringing to the market, could have on reducing environmental issues within the region.

In the video below, the Co-Founder of WaterSec Ahmed Slim BOUAKEZ presents the green technology solution WaterSec is bringing to the market and the impact our Buy Tunisia programme has on their business.

Happy World Earth Day!

World Earth Day is an annual event on April 22nd to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First held on April 22nd, 1970, it now includes a wide range of events coordinated globally by Earth.org including 1 billion people in more than 193 countries. The official theme for 2022 is Invest In Our Planet.

The significance of this World Earth Day is to support environmental protection. From the practice of protecting the natural environment by individuals, organisations and governments, its objectives are to conserve natural resources and the existing natural environment and, where possible, to repair damage and reverse trends.

This World Earth Day, many groups are highlighting the things we as a society can do to protect drinking water sources and save water globally by reducing consumption. That’s why, on World Earth Day we wanted to showcase a member of our programme's Green Tech cohort WaterSec, a company founded by engineers to create a technology solution to monitor water usage and keep track of water consumption.

In our latest blog article, we discuss water consumption globally, the specific impacts it is having within Tunisia and what businesses and consumers can do to significantly reduce their water usage. We also explore the wider issue this is having on our environment and how an innovation, like the one WaterSec is bringing to the market, could have on reducing environmental issues within the region.

In 1970, Earth Day celebration came to life to raise awareness about the oil spill in the oceans and its impact on the environment. Two decades later, it was celebrated in over 140 countries around the globe through activities like shores and forest clean ups, planting trees, and turning off the lig...

During our event in Hammamet last month, those businesses that make up our women-led businesses cohort had the opportunity to present and share their experiences in the market. In addition, they offered their thoughts during roundtables and panel discussions on challenges faced within both the domestic market and international markets for their businesses. Moreover, they cited the opportunities presented from our programme participation and key learnings for going forward.

Women-led enterprises within Tunisia.

Our Buy Tunisia programme has been committed to tackling discrimination, creating awareness of, and advancing gender equality policies and practices among the various cohorts of businesses we have worked with during this phase of our programme.

The idea is to look towards a future where women and men have the same rights and opportunities to establish and lead within an organisation. They will also have the necessary network of support needed to advance their own businesses within the region.

Together with the Next Women Tunisie, OCO Global, Tetra Tech International Development Services and British Embassy Tunis, our programme has worked in collaboration with two different cohorts of women-led businesses to offer mentoring, advice and digital marketing support so that their businesses can grow within both Tunisia and as well other markets.

In addition, working with those businesses across our cohorts within textiles, tech, green-tech and agri-food, as well as other partners to share key learnings and best practices to advance gender equality in the supply chain, we are building a credible business case for gender equality as an enabler for workers rights.

During our event in Hammamet, those businesses that make up our women-led businesses cohort had the opportunity to present and share their experiences in the market. In addition, they offered their thoughts during roundtables and panel discussions on challenges faced within both the domestic market and international markets for their businesses. Moreover, they cited the opportunities presented from our programme participation and key learnings for going forward.

We look forward to sharing the outcomes of our involvement with our women-led businesses and the impact our work has had over the coming months.

Green technology within Tunisia.

This year, our Buy Tunisia programme launched a new cohort that looked to support green-technology businesses within Tunisia who are developing and bringing to the market innovations that look to address net zero carbon targets and the circular economy.

The businesses that make up our green-tech cohort all share an objective: to positively contribute to a low carbon future.

During our event in Hammamet, those businesses that make up our green-tech cohort had the opportunity to present and share their solutions with our remaining cohort of businesses. In addition, they offered their thoughts during roundtables and panel discussions on the market challenges they face, the opportunity the UK market offers their businesses and the benefits their solutions can provide, following the climate change pledges made during the recent COP26 in Glasgow.

Over the past three months our team has collaborated and worked with the businesses that make up our green tech cohort and we would like to thank all those businesses who participated in our green-tech cohort: TrustiT, Arom Air, Robo Care, Comporoll, ControlMed, IX.0, WaterSec, Boxstop and Be Wireless Solutions.

Last week, Tuesday 22nd March, our programme in association with our partners at OCO Global, Next Woman Tunisie, Tetra Tech International Development Services and British Embassy Tunis celebrated the end of the MAP and WEE programmes, by organising a networking event to conclude this phase of our programme.

A two day event in Hammamet, with the companies that make up our women-led businesses, agri-food, textiles, tech and green-tech cohorts, along with our programmes’ respective industry specialists recapped the previous year.

Through roundtables, panel discussions and insightful networking conversations, it was a great opportunity for those who are part of our programme to learn from and discuss their enriching experiences with inspiring entrepreneurs and industry experts.

From our team at Buy Tunisia, we would like to thank all those businesses who attended and all the participants for their hard work and passion during this phase of the programme.

We look forward to sharing more news and updates to come about our programme over the coming months!

Happy World Water Day!

World Water Day has been held annually on March 22nd since 1993 to celebrate water, but also raise awareness of the 2 billion people living without access to safe water.

The day is about highlighting the importance of fresh water and advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.

The recent UN Climate Change report on impacts, adaptation and vulnerability globally and the outcomes of the recent COP26 have demonstrated an urgent need for people and businesses alike to make changes, and with these changes, innovations within the market are needed to help eliminate the damage being caused to our environment.

Thats why, on World Water Day we wanted to showcase a member of our programmes Green Tech cohort WaterSec, a company founded by engineers to create a technology solution to monitor water usage and keep track of water consumption.

WaterSec is a response to a global problem of an acute lack and waste of water. WaterSec’s solution is designed to reduce people’s water consumption using cutting-edge technologies.

The founders, Slim Bouakez, Yasmine Ben Miloud, Mohamed Guenbri, Khoubeib Tlili and Zoubeir Zarrouk share a common desire to create a solution that protects and saves water - this shared goal has thus brought WaterSec’s solution to the market.

Creating a fashion brand, ready for !

Introducing Fatma Ben Soltane, Founder & CEO of Fierce Sportswear and member of our programme’s Women-Led Business cohort.

A Tunisian designer, Fatma has been working within the fashion industry for a decade and already launched a successful women’s luxury ready-to-wear brand ‘Fierce Sportswear’.

Having studied for a Corporate Finance degree at a public university in France, Fatma has developed a career from her studies. However, she decided to pursue her desire for a career in fashion by buying a sewing machine at home and developing her own brand.

Fatma felt there was an opportunity to create an inclusive brand, which led to the idea of Fierce Sportswear. It is now the first Tunisian-made activewear brand providing a fashionable, inclusive and high quality product at a competitive price. The main focus is on mixing function with fashion for all shapes and sizes. Fierce also aims to normalise hijabs within sports, leading to more acceptance, confidence and empowerment for women within the region.

Fierce Sportswear is a ‘slow fashion’ brand, whose production is fully executed in-house, with an eco-friendly manufacturing process, where they upcycle their unsold items to generate as little waste as possible. Fatma has built her business with the idea of using recycled fabrics made of plastic bottles, and the company aims to produce all of their sportswear using at least 70% recycled fabrics by the end of 2023.

In a recent interview, Fatma speaks about her journey as a business owner and how she has developed Fierce Sportswear into a well known brand in Tunisia and the businesses growth over the years.
