This Yamazaki Single Malt is one of the Yamazaki 2020 special edition series released in Nov 2020. Solely matured in French oak ex-wine casks selected by Suntory from the Bordeaux region the wine cask maturation gives a smooth and rounded winey character with some sweet, fresh citrus, green apples/sour fruits notes to this Yamazaki. An excellent wine cask matured whisky. Color: Amber with a hint of red Nose: Berry like sweetness with subtle spicy notes Palate: Rich, complex and a velvety mouth feel Finish: Sweet and wine like sourness imparted form the French Oak.

An old cask strength bottling from Macallan and matured exclusively in Sherry Oak from Jerez. Given that this is an old bottling (bottled around 2000s), the box is slightly damaged. This is a great older cask strength bottling to compare the difference between a Sherry Oak matured versus Sherry Oak seasoned casks being used by Macallan for their newer releases.

The Red Collection is an exquisite range of distinguished and rare single malt scotch whiskies which capture The Macallan’s deep respect for tradition and craftsmanship. The distinctive red colour is inspired by The Macallan 'Choice Old' range, released over a century ago in 1903, and brought to life by beautiful illustrations by acclaimed Spanish painter and illustrator Javi Aznarez.

The Macallan 50 Year Old is made from sherry seasoned casks and barrels and bottled at 45.1% abv.

The nose has antique oak and soft leather, light floral notes, rich cocoa and black cherry and ginger. The palate has a warming combination of dried fruits and wood spices moving into dates and dark chocolate, orange oil and hints of sultanas. The finish is rich and complex, with a long lasting aftertaste of raisins, dates and creme brulee.

The Macallan 40 Year Old is made from sherry seasoned casks and bottled at 48.1% abv.

The nose has orange and grapefruit combining with dark chocolate, along with antique oak and wood spices, fig and poached pear. The palate has warm spices, with ginger, nutmeg and cinnamon with vanilla. Malty notes and fig are present throughout before a long finish with delicate wisps of woodsmoke.

The Macallan 60 Year Old is matured in a combination of sherry seasoned and refill casks and bottled at 43.4% abv.

The nose has a combination of sweet and fruit notes, alongside baked peach and pineapple with figs and dates. Hints of leather merge creating a luxuriously resinous aroma. Dry antique oak notes and hints of ginger develop into tropical papaya and mango on the palate. The finish is complex with lime, liquorice and dark chocolate.

Macallan 71 Year Old The Red Collection

It may be hard to imagine today, but for much of the 20th century, Macallan was primarily a constituent malt in blends. It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.

This impressive 71 year old was launched in October 2020 as part of The Red Collection. The range also includes a 40, 50, 60, 74 and 78 year old, some of the oldest whisky ever bottled by the distillery. The colour Red has a myriad of significance for Macallan, from its founder's name, Alexander Reid, meaning "the red one," to the label aesthetic being an homage to the oldest vintages bottled from the distillery in the late 1970s and Allan Shiach marking them with red ribbons in the 1980s.

The 71 year old was created by Whisky Maker, Sarah Burgess and is presented in a oak box hand-crafted in the UK using the same European wood used to make Macallan casks. The interior of the box has been upholstered by Bridge of Weir using high quality, sustainably sourced Scottish leather.
