"My Wife Really Appreciated It"

Everyone needs, and deserves, space and time out to re-charge 🪫🔋

But too many business owners we know get caught up in the day-to-day during their time off or when on holiday. They spend time stuck in the shade, missing out on making memories, and frustrating those around them.

This was business owner Peter after he'd read and implemented the tools and strategies contained within our book 'I don't work Fridays', and then subsequently our mentoring programme:

“Just back from my first holiday in 16 years where I didn’t check any work emails. My wife really appreciated it.”

Happy Peter...
Happy Wife...
Happy Holiday...
Happy Business when he returned...

And guess what? It’s not rocket science to be able to go on holiday 🏝️ and switch off. But you DO need to plan ahead and make sure everyone in the business knows your goals, the plan, and what their 100% looks like to achieve these.

It’s no use stuck in your head, or always on your to-do-list because you don’t want to let go, or you don’t trust anyone enough.

If you’ve not yet started the process, put 90 minutes in the diary this week to get planning because we don’t want you missing out this summer, or promising yourself it will be different next year - because you said that last year!

𝑾𝒉𝒐 𝑪𝒂𝒓𝒆𝒔?
We may not ask ourselves very often “who cares?”, but it is demonstrated every single day in how we think, act, and behave.
And it influences those around us.

"I don't suppose she'll want to work with us again." ...
"Oh well. Who cares?" 🤷‍♂️

"It looks as if we’re going to lose that customer." ...
"Who cares? She was hard work". 🤷‍♂️

"I don't think Mike's going to be happy when he hears about this." ...
"Who cares what Mike thinks?" 🤷‍♂️

"I guess they won't be visiting us again." ...
"Probably not, but really - who cares?" 🤷‍♂️

“I should have prepared more for this meeting. Ah, who cares? At least I'm here.” 🤷‍♂️

It’s so easy to not care. To avoid difficult situations, brush it off, relinquish all responsibility, blame others...

But when we care we can make a difference –

It makes us responsible and provides the opportunity to positively contribute.

And this all starts with YOU 🫵 as the Leader.

At times, it does feel like you’re running around like a headless chicken trying to do everything, and it’s tempting to cut corners, be dismissive, even stop caring about some aspects of your business.

But the moment you feel like this it’s important to take a breath and a step back, remember why you set-up in the first place – why you cared and how you were going to change the world in your own way.

And if you hear yourself saying “who cares”, then remember the impact this will have on those around you.

We love what we do – it’s one of our Maxim’s that we live and breathe every day – and we care. It’s not all plain sailing, and we do dish out tough love, but it’s because we want the best for our clients and what their business needs (not necessarily always what they want).

Take care.

- Martin

It won’t be long until we’re at the mid-point of 2026, so we want to check-in to see if you’re Aligned and where you want to be.

• How is your 6+6 Forecast going (your 6 months of actuals and 6 months of forecast)❓
• Are you on track to hit your half-year targets❓ By how much❓
• Are you below target❓ What are you planning to do to get back on track❓

Your response will fall into one of these:

1. You won’t have this information to hand, nor even know where to start, because you haven’t actually started.

2. You’ll know where to go to get the information from, quickly review it, then bury it away again until November and hope for the best.

3. You will know your current position. And you’ll either know there aren’t any issues because the business hasn’t alerted 🔔 you to any, or, you may be behind, but you’re aware of this and are taking action to catch up.

Now, ask your Team the same questions…

We're tempted to bet our mortgage that it’s unlikely your team members have been able to answer any of these questions.

Whatever category your response falls into, it’s NOT TOO LATE to start getting clarity across your entire team on how far on or off target your business is by implementing a Rolling 12 Month Forecast Plan:

• 3 + 9 Forecast shows 3 months of actuals and 9 months of forecast.
• 6 + 6 Forecast shows 6 months of actuals and 6 months of forecast.
• 9 + 3 Forecast shows 9 months of actuals and 3 months of forecast.

At each month end its good practice to track your performance against the forecast to see if you’re on track.

As the year progresses, the forecast for the year should become more accurate the more it comprises actual months and fewer forecast months.

‼️Please don’t leave this to your Accountant, or assume they're doing it‼️

By making this routine, everyone across your business will be united + focussed on the end goal, and you’ll never miss target – you’ll just run out of month!

It was like waiting for a 🚌; no traditional Bank Holiday Monday for over 200 days, and then we get 2 in 1 month! We're not complaining of course, because we all need downtime.

We read an article about the origin of ‘public’ holidays, back in the time when we were largely an agricultural economy, and rural life centred around family, farming 🚜, village life, and seasons.

Livelihoods depended on seasons with the risk of flooding, a poor harvest, or a long winter having a disastrous effect. So, people celebrated the natural cycle of life such as the end of winter, summer solstice, and harvests 🌾

Whilst we may live in a more urban world, with different economic situations and advanced technology, seasonality is still very important in many businesses.

Approximately 1/2 our Private Clients run a Seasonal Business. At a certain income level, it’s possible to have momentum and get through the ‘quieter’ months, but below seven figures it becomes difficult to carry overheads and staff for the less busy months and see that cash get lower and lower.

So, what can you do? Well, there are Three Little Words:

Gross
Margin
Value...

(This applies to ANY business, not just a seasonal one).

Every business has set costs they need to fund to deliver sales. These are generally referred to as Fixed Costs. They form the breakeven point of your business.

As an example, if my business has Fixed Costs of £30k per month, as long as I sell £30k of sales (after my cost of sales has been deducted) I will breakeven.

Think about it this way – if your business has 6 great months but also 6 bad months; then the 6 great pay for the 6 bad. Putting this into figures (after the cost of sales deduction):

• 6 months of great business could be £40k per month.
• 6 months of poor sales could be £20k, resulting in a business achieving £360k.
• Now if that business had fixed costs of £30k per month it would break even, the great covering the bad.
• But what if the bad months could actually breakeven – not make a profit but breakeven – hit that gross margin value? That would then result in all the bumper months turning into profit.

To give you an example, when Martin Norbury was CEO for a PLC that repaired accident damaged cars, this is the philosophy that he focused on – getting the most out of the bumper times but limiting the liability on the quieter months.

The answer became obvious: what vehicles are literally wheeled out in our quieter times, the Summer? ... Motorbikes! Caravans! Motorhomes!

Yes, they set up accident repair services for motorbikes, caravans, and motorhomes. NOT to make a profit but to actually get it to breakeven, to keep the staff we needed for the busy period, and to turn the bumper months into exactly that.

So, if you have a few quieter days, weeks, months in the year what could YOU do to breakeven during those periods and release the bumper times into profit?
