I don’t know about you, but Q1/this term has been a real doozy, and I’ve never looked forward so much to a 3 week school break with - wait for it - NO TRAVEL OR EXTRA CHILDCARE PLANNED.

The last few months brought multiple bouts of illness, both for me and for multiple members of the family, each time bringing interruptions and delays to my standard routine (mostly work).

In addition, I finished a work contract - one that I was thrilled to see the back of - and jumped straight into a new one, which has been an intense scramble.

A couple of months ago, I’d been looking into options to get away for the yawning break that is the Easter school holiday - 3.54.5 weeks for one of my kids, 2.4 weeks for the other 2 (but who's counting). Flights were super pricey and no amount of Google Flight-ing, Skyscanning or alternative airport and date searching yielded better results. Then I pleaded with my parents to come visit, to no avail.

This is how much I’m programmed to avoid unstructured time with my kids, not to mention the latent pressure to have frequent and fabulous (and expensive!) holidays.

Eventually I accepted that we’d be doing a staycation, and I also realised that no travel meant no packing and planning and all the stress that comes with that.

And then I embraced it and started looking forward with delight at the prospect of not having to go anywhere or do anything.

And - get this - for the first time EVER, I actually thought about things that we could do as a family that we would all enjoy, rather than things that would make me feel virtuous as a parent, or that I would enjoy or would benefit me, but that the kids would be insufferable about (eg CAMPS, bike rides, museums, visits to natural or historic attractions).

Here’s what’s on the list: Flip Out Wandsworth (which FYI is closing in Wandsworth in June!), a theme or water park (maybe), glamping (kids’ request), cinema. And there’s provisional agreement to do a few days of camps with some friends, still to be negotiated and finalised...

I'm sure this all of this is common knowledge now that has spread as quickly as Omicron itself, nevertheless I feel I must share these learnings ( )⠀

#1 If your child had Covid late 2021, they are still highly susceptible to Omicron. This I learned when my oldest son, who had Covid in December, tested positive several days after his siblings did. I was so sure he was immune, only tested him by chance, and was shocked when he was positive.⠀

#2 I was feeling pretty smug about being superimmune, fit and healthy, having good genetic stock, etc. and all that came crashing down when I had a sniffly night of sleep on Day 8 of having it in the house. It really *does* take that long for it to infect and incubate, sneaky little bu**er! Easy to read, hard to believe when it happens to you.⠀

#3 Day 5 and Day 6 are not the magical milestones you want them to be! I thought: They're little people. They're healthy. Surely they'll recover as fast as possible. NOPE. My two otherwise healthy and hardy 8 year olds were at home 9 full days before I could send them back to their rightful daytime location. ⠀

What are your now-useless nuggets of wisdom?⠀

May your plans be unaffected by Omicron!!⠀

FUN NEW GAME CALLED COVORDLE!!⠀

You might have heard of the phenomenon that is Wordle, which subsequently gave rise to all sorts of memery. I got in on the action and made one for the Covid progression in my house - first the 3 kids, then me, dad is last man standing...for now.⠀

Generated from Covid prison. If you've gotten out, tell me how many days it took you 🆘 💀

Skiing - it looks like it's actually happening?!
*Should say looking very very likely though in these times we can never say for sure for sure

Off the top of the head, the things you should be thinking about if you're going skiing this half term...
✅Passports - check they're all not expired!
✅Make sure you've got the clothing/kit you need for all the family (here's a good list) - if you don't, hit up friends, Fara/charity shops, and/or eBay before heading to buy new!
✅Check Covid regulations (testing, masks etc) for where you're heading - it can vary from region to region so read the fine print (eg France requires surgical mask or for cloth masks, a special type)
✅Travel insurance / EHIC card
✅Driving, car rentals and transfers - take your drivers licenses, rent snow chains/tyres, confirm transfers
✅Ski lessons (adult and kids) booked/confirmed
✅Make sure the pets are taken care of!
✅Prescriptions / medicines (Paracetamol, Calpol, motion sickness tablets - take before the windy car ride! or bands)
✅Hand warmers!
✅Kids entertainment

It's that time again - half term is just a few weeks away. All the usual suspects are ready to take your children and your money and generally speaking good availability across the board! The one exception is which is sold out at Emanuel, as usual - but other locations are available.
