Just wrapped up an inspiring day at Brunel University of London Software Innovation event, where undergraduate and Master’s students showcased impressive software solutions spanning healthcare, cybersecurity, edtech, student safety on campus, and more.

EmergeIQ has proudly served on Brunel’s Computer Science Department Advisory Board for the past four years, offering industry insights to help align academic programmes with real-world business needs. We’ve also had the pleasure of welcoming Brunel students into our team during their placement years and post-graduation.

Students are the future of every industry, and we’re grateful for the continued opportunity to engage with Brunel’s exceptional talent—both students and faculty alike. Thank you Alan Serrano, Dr Mahir Arzoky and the rest of the faculty for having us and organising a great event. Also thanks Jason Parkin for joining me as co-judge this year. Did You Know: Ray Kurzweil, an inventor, futurist, and engineer at Google (who has a pretty good knack for making accurate predictions) predicts that chatbots will have human-level language ability by the year 2029.

According to Kurzweil, “If you think you can have a meaningful conversation with a human, you’ll be able to have a meaningful conversation with an AI in 2029. But you’ll be able to have interesting conversations before that.”

In an A/B test, you take a webpage or app screen and modify it to create a second version of the same page. This change can be as simple as a single headline, button or be a complete redesign of the page. Then, half of your traffic is shown the original version of the page (known as the control) and the other half is shown the modified version of the page (the variation).

As visitors are served either the control or variation, their engagement with each experience is measured and collected in a dashboard and analysed through a statistical engine. You can then determine whether changing the experience had a positive, negative or neutral effect on visitor behavior.

A/B testing allows individuals, teams and companies to make careful changes to their user experiences while collecting data on the results. This allows them to construct hypotheses and to learn why certain elements of their experiences impact user behavior. In another way, they can be proven wrong - their opinion about the best experience for a given goal can be proven wrong through an A/B test.

Over the decades, artificial intelligence has garnered a negative reputation as a force that will eventually destroy humanity. And part of that has to do with the nomenclature, which indirectly defines AI as something that is on-par with the human mind.

Only general artificial intelligence can match human intelligence, and by most estimates, general AI is at least decades away. Powered by deep learning and machine learning, current AI technologies and applications have produced impressive results, and they can often outperform humans in specific tasks such as classifying images or transcribing speech. But the limits and challenges of deep learning prevent it from making trivial abstract decisions that even the simplest human mind can do.

Early adopters see competitive advantage in big data, and are rapidly moving to disrupt their own data practices, rather than let competitors beat them to the punch. Accenture’s study into the success rates of big data found that almost 79% of people believe that companies who fail to embrace big data could risk bankruptcy.

The study also found that around 51% of companies strongly agree that big data will revolutionise the way they do business. Additionally, 39% strongly agreed that big data will dramatically change their operations in the future.

Machine learning is a great career path for those interested in data, automation, and algorithms as your day will be filled with analysing large amounts of data and implementing and automating it.

A career in machine learning has a good base salary as well. The World Economic Forum stated that “AI, Machine Learning, and automation will power the creation of 97 million new jobs by 2025.” Therefore, it is safe to say that now is a great time to start a career in machine learning.

Most people create an image of AI in their mind after watching science fiction movies. They find this technology dangerous for humanity. We should not take these movies' stories as reality. While machines can learn from data, they are not so smart that they can consciously become aware like humans.

For example, a car can’t change its context of operations if it is carrying a severe patient versus if it is not. Therefore, there is currently no possibility for machines to dominate this world.
