Staff shortages in nursing homes are at an all-time high for a variety of reasons:

Estimated by 2040 there will be 15 million people aged 65+ in the UK. Workforce organisation Skills for Care estimates weโll need an additional 130,000 caregivers each year. Plus the care workforce is aging, a fifth of all caregivers are over the age of 55, meaning 300,000 caregivers will retire over the next decade.

Despite the fact that more than 80% of care services are rated as good or outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, many media organisations portray care homes in a negative light, leading to a public perception that care work is low paid, low skilled, and unfulfilling.

The healthcare industry has already been particularly hard hit. Over 100,000 of the 1.47 million people working in adult social care are from the EU, with one in every seven care worker roles in London filled by an EU national.
