Increasing numbers of women are working in construction. 37% of new construction workers entering the industry from higher education are women.

Since the 1600's women have been contributing to construction projects. Lady Anne Clifford was the first woman to take an active role in a building project, managing the design and building programme for improvements to the Westmorland Estate.

Thankfully, the industry is far more accessible to women now and this is only set to improve in the future. There are so many roles beyond hands-on construction that there's a role fit for anyone.

How Can We Make Construction More Sustainable?

The UK Government want to reduce construction emissions by 50% between now and 2025. This means sustainability has become a big thing for many construction companies.

Your construction company can improve their sustainability by:
1. Think about your office situation - Your on-site office is often temporary, but they aren't usually energy efficient. Improve your energy efficiency with things such as insulation and LED lighting for some quick wins.
2. Reduce your transport needs - You can't help needing to transport materials and equipment to site. But by sourcing them locally you can reduce the length of travel, therefore reducing emissions.
3. Cut down on your waste - Approximately 100 million tonnes of materials go to waste every year from construction sites. By recycling as much of your waste as possible you can improve your sustainability.
4. Use sustainable suppliers - If you prioritise suppliers who are also sustainable you can improve the sustainability of the whole project and not just the construction itself.
