This is why I love being on the ground in Tanzania. 🇹🇿

The first clip shows a rough garnet I purchased from a trader in Morogoro.

At that stage, all the potential is hidden inside the stone. You can make educated predictions, but until it is cut, you never know exactly what nature has created.

I entrusted the rough to Noreen, whose cutting revealed something rather special.

The finished gemstone displays beautiful flashes of blue and a brilliance that simply wasn’t visible in the rough crystal.

Moments like this are one of the great joys of gemstone sourcing. Watching a gemstone’s hidden beauty emerge is a reminder that every stone has a story.

Sometimes a gemstone is just too beautiful to let go.

But if you’re looking for a remarkable gemstone for a bespoke jewellery project or to add to your collection, I’d be delighted to help find one for you.

That’s the advantage of being here in Tanzania: access to gemstones at source, the ability to assess them in person, and the opportunity to uncover gems that most people will never see.

📩 Send me a message if you’re searching for something special.

💙 Thinking about buying a tanzanite?

Today I visited the Tanzanite Experience in Arusha.

Many visitors come to Tanzania for a safari and leave thinking about tanzanite. 💎

It’s easy to see why. Found in just one location on Earth, tanzanite has become one of Tanzania’s most sought-after treasures.

If you’re considering buying a tanzanite during your visit, the Tanzanite Experience offers a good introduction to the gemstone’s story, from its discovery through to the finished jewellery you see in the shops.

But understanding the story of tanzanite and choosing the right tanzanite are two very different things.

What many buyers don’t realise is that colour, clarity, cut, rarity and value can vary enormously from one stone to the next. Two tanzanites may appear similar at first glance, yet one could be significantly rarer or better suited to your goals and budget.

For example, most people know about blue and violet tanzanite, but far fewer are aware of some of the rarer colour variations and characteristics that can have a significant impact on desirability and value.

This is where expert guidance can make all the difference.

As a qualified gemmologist, I help clients look beyond the sales display and understand what they are actually buying. Whether you’re searching for a tanzanite, sapphire, ruby, emerald or another significant gemstone, I provide independent sourcing support to help you identify quality, compare options and make informed decisions.

The best gemstone isn’t necessarily the most expensive one.

It’s the one that’s right for you.🤗

A simple guide to understanding coloured gemstone prices, the common mistakes buyers make and the illusions that can make a stone seem more or less valuable than it really is.

That final point matters more than most outsiders realise. Because in coloured gemstones, trust still drives enormous parts of the trade.

Most people think finding a gemstone is the hard part.

It isn’t.

Finding the right gemstone is.

I’m currently in Arusha, Tanzania, one of Africa’s most important gemstone trading hubs.

Every day, gemstones from mines across the region pass through here before eventually finding their way into jewellery shops around the world.

What’s fascinating is that when you’re this close to the source, you learn things that rarely appear on a certificate:

🔹 Why one sapphire costs twice as much as another.

🔹 Why two gemstones with identical lab reports can look completely different.

🔹 Which stones are genuinely exceptional.

For anyone buying an engagement ring gemstone, commissioning bespoke jewellery, or searching for a specific stone, these details matter.

Because you’re not just buying a gemstone.

You’re choosing something that may become part of your family’s story for generations.

That’s why I spend time in places like this.

Not to find a gemstone.

To find the right one.

Would you rather choose a gemstone from a photograph, or from someone who has seen hundreds in person?

A gemstone certificate, or more accurately called a lab report, is an independent evaluation from a recognised gemmological laboratory. These reports describe a stone’s key characteristics: species/variety, carat weight, colour, clarity, measurements, and treatment disclosures.
