SALE PREVIEW: Andy Warhol created these original Campbell’s tomato soup can shopping bags for his 1966 exhibition at the Instutue of Contemporary Art, Boston. This particular bag has stood the test of time and remains in excellent condition, and has an estimate of £2,000-£4,000.

SALE PREVIEW: This outstanding portrait by Jacopo Bassano is one of few surviving works by the artist. Depicting a Procuratore in a period cap and rich burgundy velvet, it was previously in the collections of Lucien Bonaparte, Prince of Canino and Musignano, and Virginia Museum, Richmond. Bassano’s works are exceedingly rare: just one signed portrait exists. Indeed, the account book recording all commissions for the artist up until the 1550s registers little more than a dozen portraits over two decades. Although the exact identity of the sitter is not known, the sumptuous velvet ‘vesta’ or ‘toga’ he wears demarks a high political status. The painting has an estimate of £30,000-£50,000, and will be offered in our 29 June sale.

SALE PREVIEW: The main portrait within this painting appears to be an oil study from life with a collection of fragments to aggrandize the oil sketch portrait. It had been overpainted to be presented as a full half length portrait. We find the amalgamation electric! This remarkable portrait of the Jacobean dramatist and Member of Parliament Sir William Killigrew (1606-1695) was miraculously revealed by restorers underneath a later work painted over the top. Killigrew was a courtier to Charles I, and later turned to playwriting after the Restoration, penning four dramas. From the studio of the leading portraitist Sir Anthony Van Dyck, a half-length portrait of Killigrew by Van Dyck is held in the Tate collection. In its Dutch ripple frame, the portrait has an estimate of £10,000-£15,000.

SALE PREVIEW: This bucolic elevation of Oxford from the southern edge of Christ Church Meadow is a charming insight into the university city in years gone by. Two gowned dons walk through the trees, a boat sails along the Thames, and horses gallop across the Meadow. The painting will be offered in our 29 June sale.

SPOTLIGHT: A highlight of our April sale were these stunning 20th century n**e drawings by leading artists of the period. Henri Gaudier-Brzeska’s ‘Seated Female Nude’ achieved a healthy £7,000 against an estimate of £3,000-£5,000, and John Piper’s sprawling n**e raced to a hammer of £4,500 against the expected £1,500-£2,500. Jean Cocteau’s ‘Le Couple Amoreaux’ led closely behind, and sold for £4,200. Representing some of the biggest names in 20th century art, the drawings are a strong addition to any stylish home! **edrawing -Brzeska

SALE PREVIEW: This remarkable painting by Hugh Barron, a pupil of Sir Joshua Reynolds, depicts the pioneering 18th-century oncologist doctor Dr. Richard Guy. An early authority in the field, Guy advocated non-surgical approaches to treating cancers, and in 1762 published research on breast cancer, claiming over 100 successful treatments without surgery. This enigmatic portrait is a fine example from Barron’s oeuvre, and exhibits his close study of Reynolds and Zoffany. Still in its original Chippendale gilt frame, the painting is a handsome survival of the period, and has an estimate of £10,000-£15,000.

SALE PREVIEW: This outstanding work by the renowned British Modernist painter John Tunnard ARA (1900-1971) will be offered in our sale on 29 June. Created with pencil and gouache on paper, the work is entitled ‘Phase’, and has an estimate of £10,000-£15,000. ‘Phase’ is characteristic of the compelling interaction of Tunnard’s many diverse influences, which included the works of Joan Miró and Paul Klee, and his keen interest in British surrealism. Alongside his contemporary Graham Sutherland, Tunnard’s works have been categorised as Neo-Romantic for their dramatic modernist rendering of the traditional landscape, spliced with bright shapes and surreal iconography. And though he enjoyed success in his own lifetime, elected as a Royal Academician, Tunnard’s oeuvre is presently benefitting from a dramatic rediscovery. Could this gem be yours?
