I’ll keep this short. Can’t promise sweet.
If you’re good at what you do, you should say ‘no’ more often than ‘yes.’
You want reasons? I got reasons.
1. Opportunity cost. Every time you say ‘yes’ to a less-than-great project or client, you waste the time you could spend on a better one.
2. People make an opinion of you based on your body of work. Every time you add not-great projects, that brings your entire portfolio down a notch. And if you’re not even willing to show off the work you’ve just done… Then what the hell did you take it on for?
3. When you go for stuff that doesn’t light a fire under your butt, it shows in the work. If you have any doubts, just go and look at your favourite past projects.
4. Bad clients ruin everything — including your drive to do great work. Do everyone a favour and say ’thanks but no thanks.’
5. If it’s about money… It shouldn’t be. Yes, yes, I’ve heard of utility bills. But if you’re good and know how to charge based on the value you bring, the money will come.
(If you don’t know how to charge based on value, DM me — we need to talk.)
