One way to solve the labour shortage in the US is to fix the care crisis for those with caring responsibilities outside their jobs.

More than half the American workforce have unpaid care responsibilities and must be supported and encouraged to remain in the workplace, urges a report by (BCG) based on the .

To bridge the gap, more workers for child, adult, and medical (especially chronic) care will need to be employed.

"Paid-care shortages strain the ability of employed caregivers to participate in the workforce, as many have experienced acutely during the pandemic," confirms the report.

It is estimated paid-care sector jobs will make up an enormous three-quarters of the nation’s job growth by 2030. Most jobs in the caring profession offer low wages and are demanding, and likely to remain vacant in the labour-constrained market, says the report, which was published last year.

"Increased immigration, longer life expectancy and a decline in birth rates are transforming the US workforce in two important ways," says Adia Harvey Wingfield, Professor of Sociology, Arts & Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis.

“The people powering this nation’s economy include far more people of colour and workers over 55 than was the case four decades ago. And this diversity will keep growing in the years ahead, economists predict." 

Professor Wingfield has looked at research from important US institutions including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which has found the number of workers who are neither white nor Latino nearly doubled to about 40 per cent in 2019 from roughly 23 per cent in 1979. 

Additionally, more older people are continuing to work. Now there are more than 37 million workers in the USA aged 55 and older: that's nearly 1 in 4 employees compared with fewer than 1 in 7 in 1979. The US government predicts that the number of Americans aged 75 and older remaining in the labour force will nearly double between 2020 and 2030.

Are companies heading into a diversity crisis by laying off their DEI talent?

Diversity, equity and inclusion roles are diminishing at a faster pace than other jobs, says research undertaken by Revelio Labs with The Washington Post and Reuters.

Analysts explored how redundancies over the past two years in the technology industry have affected diversity, equity and inclusion professionals. They found that more than 300 DEI leaders, managers and other workers have left companies - sometimes entire diversity teams. "This decline in diverse hiring is not surprising, given the disproportionate impact of layoffs on DEI professionals," says the report. "Attrition rates for DEI roles have outpaced those of non-DEI roles at more than 600 US companies that laid off workers since late 2020, and have accelerated quickly in the last 6 months."

Across all industries, DEI roles tend to have more employee turnover. But at the same time, companies with DEI teams tend to have more diverse new hires as well as higher employee satisfaction, found the research.

"We know that there is great potential in letting our differences be our strengths," says Sweden's Prince Carl Philip who has dyslexia and shared his experience the World Dyslexia Assembly on Monday at New York’s Lincoln Center this week.

Thank you to Dubai for hosting a live panel discussion on diversity and inclusion in education and the workplace on campus on Thursday 6 April featuring Mehmet Onol, Senior Director - Strategic Clients Group (EMEA) at (pictured) and an expert in strategy and transformation, Yahye Siyad, Diversity and Accessibility Lead at Interactive and Elisabeth Galvin, Content Editor at Diversity Network.

The session was moderated by Siobhan McNiff, Inclusion Counsellor at Middlesex University Dubai, who
shared her work with the CAS team to advocate for people of determination in education and at work.

Yahye launched his new book, Unshakeable Will, with an exclusive and inspiring talk about his incredible life story. He shared his insights into the importance of advocating for diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in society, as he shares critical lessons from his own lived experience with a visual impairment.

Middlesex University Dubai is the largest UK university in Dubai and incredibly diverse with students from more than 100 countries attending.
