“Mum says she doesn't want carers.”

We understand.

For someone who has spent their whole life looking after themselves, accepting help can feel like losing independence.

So sometimes the conversation needs to change.

Instead of:

“You can't manage anymore.”

Try:

“What would make things a little easier for you?”

Maybe it's someone helping with a shower.

Perhaps it's support getting ready in the morning.

Maybe it's shopping.

Or simply having someone to accompany them out for a coffee.

Good home care shouldn't arrive and suddenly take over somebody's life.

It should fit quietly around the life they're already living.

At Benopa Care, we encourage the people we support to continue doing as much as they safely can for themselves.

Because receiving help shouldn't mean losing your independence.

Sometimes it can help you keep it. 💚

How do you know when Mum or Dad might need a little more help at home?

It isn't always obvious.

Often, it's not one big event.

It's a collection of small changes that gradually start appearing.

You might notice:

🏡 The house isn't being kept as it normally would be

🥪 Meals are being skipped or food is being left untouched

💊 Medication is becoming more difficult to manage

👕 Personal care or appearance has changed

🚶 Walking has become slower or less confident

😔 They're going out less and spending more time alone

📞 You're finding yourself checking on them more often because you're worried

None of these automatically means somebody needs a full care package.

But they can be signs that it's worth having a conversation.

Sometimes just a few hours of the right support can help somebody remain independent at home for longer.

At Benopa Care, we believe care should be introduced around the person — not simply because they've reached a certain age.

💚 Notice the changes. Start the conversation.

“Mum doesn't need a carer yet..."

We hear this more often than you might think.

And sometimes they're absolutely right.

But needing a little support doesn't always mean needing personal care.

Maybe Mum is spending too much time alone.

Perhaps Dad has stopped going shopping because walking around the supermarket has become difficult.

Maybe appointments are becoming harder to manage.

Or perhaps you'd simply feel better knowing somebody was popping in regularly.

That's where companionship care can help.

It could be:

☕ A cup of tea and conversation

🛒 Shopping together

🚶 Getting out of the house

📅 Accompanying someone to an appointment

💬 Regular friendly company

🏡 A little practical support at home

Sometimes the goal isn't to “care for” somebody.

It's simply to help them keep living their normal life.

If you have a parent, relative, friend or neighbour who might benefit from a little extra support, you're welcome to have an informal conversation with us.

No pressure. No obligation.

Just a conversation about what might help. 💚

Good care isn't always about “doing”.

Sometimes it's sitting down.

Having a cup of tea.

Listening to a story you've probably heard before. 😊

Having a laugh.

Remembering how somebody likes things done.

And making sure the person receiving care never feels like they're simply the next name on a list.

That's the kind of home care we believe in at Benopa Care.

Care should feel personal.

Because you're not inviting a “service” into your home.

You're inviting a person.💚

Benopa Care provides person-centred home care and companionship across Enfield and surrounding areas.

Sometimes the first sign that Mum or Dad needs a little more support isn't a major fall.

It can be the smaller things.

Holding onto furniture when walking.

Taking much longer to get out of a chair.

Becoming nervous about using the stairs.

Avoiding going outside.

Or saying, “I'm fine” while quietly becoming less confident.

These small changes are worth noticing.

At Benopa Care, we believe home care should help people maintain their independence, not take it away.

Sometimes that means simply being there — providing reassurance, supporting safe mobility and helping someone continue with the everyday routines that matter to them.

If you've started noticing changes in an older relative, you don't necessarily have to wait for a crisis before having a conversation about support.

🧠 Understanding Delayed Hospital Discharge: Why the Right Support at Home Matters 💙

Many people are medically fit to leave hospital but remain there because the right support isn't yet in place. Recovering in the comfort of home, with the right care, often leads to better outcomes and greater independence.

Before going home, make sure you have:

🏡 A safe home environment with any necessary equipment.
💊 A clear understanding of medications and when to take them.
📋 Your hospital discharge plan and follow-up appointments.
🚶 Any walking aids or mobility equipment you need.
👨‍👩‍👧 Support from family, friends or a professional care provider.

After discharge, keep an eye out for:

⚠️ Increasing pain or breathlessness.
🌡️ Signs of infection, such as redness, swelling or fever.
😵 Dizziness, confusion or repeated falls.
🍽️ Poor appetite or dehydration.
💤 Excessive tiredness or difficulty managing everyday tasks.

Helpful products:
✔️ Pill organisers
✔️ Shower chairs
✔️ Grab rails
✔️ Walking frames
✔️ Raised toilet seats
✔️ Personal alarm pendants

Many of these items are available through pharmacies, mobility retailers or may be provided following an NHS or local authority assessment.

🧍 Frailty: Recognising the Early Signs Can Help Someone Stay Independent 💙

💪 Reduced strength or difficulty standing up.

Simple ways to support someone living with frailty:

🥗 Eat a balanced diet with plenty of protein.
💧 Stay hydrated unless advised otherwise by a healthcare professional.
🏋️ Keep active with gentle strength and balance exercises.

🌡️ Recognising Sepsis: Knowing the Signs Could Save a Life 💙

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency. It happens when the body's response to an infection damages its own organs and tissues. Acting quickly can save lives.

Anyone can develop sepsis, but older adults are at higher risk.

Watch out for these warning signs:

🌡️ A very high or very low temperature.
😮‍💨 Rapid breathing or shortness of breath.
❤️ A fast heartbeat.
😴 Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking up.
🧠 Sudden confusion or unusual behaviour.
💧 Passing very little urine.
🥶 Pale, mottled or bluish skin.

Common infections that can lead to sepsis include:

🦠 Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
🫁 Chest infections or pneumonia
🩹 Infected wounds or pressure sores
🦷 Dental infections
🦠 Skin infections

How can you help reduce the risk?

🧼 Maintain good hand hygiene.
💧 Encourage regular hydration.
🥗 Support good nutrition.
🩹 Keep cuts and wounds clean and covered.
💊 Complete prescribed courses of antibiotics.
👩‍⚕️ Seek medical advice early if an infection is getting worse.

⚠️ Call 999 immediately if someone has signs of sepsis, especially if they become difficult to wake, are confused, struggling to breathe or look seriously unwell. Early treatment saves lives.

💙 How Benopa Care can help

Our carers are trained to recognise early signs of deterioration, monitor for changes in health, encourage good hydration and nutrition, and escalate concerns promptly to families and healthcare professionals. Early action can make all the difference.

📞 If you or a loved one would benefit from professional, compassionate home care, Benopa Care is here to help you stay safe, healthy and independent at home.

🧠 Understanding Constipation: It's More Serious Than You Think 💙

Constipation is common in older adults, but it shouldn't be ignored. If left untreated, it can lead to pain, loss of appetite, confusion, urinary problems and even hospital admission.

Signs to look out for:

🚽 Fewer than three bowel movements a week.
😣 Straining or pain when opening the bowels.
🪨 Hard, dry or lumpy stools.
🤢 Bloating or stomach discomfort.
🍽️ Reduced appetite.
😕 Increased confusion or agitation, especially in older adults.

Simple ways to help:

💧 Encourage regular fluids (unless a healthcare professional has advised a fluid restriction).
🥦 Eat plenty of fibre from fruit, vegetables, wholegrains and pulses.
🚶 Stay as active as possible with gentle daily movement.
🚽 Encourage a regular toilet routine and don't ignore the urge to go.
💊 Review medications with a GP or pharmacist, as some medicines can contribute to constipation.

Helpful products:
✔️ Fibre supplements (if recommended)
✔️ Stool softeners or laxatives (only as advised by a healthcare professional)
✔️ Footstools to improve toilet positioning
✔️ Easy-to-clean hydration bottles with time markers

These products are available from pharmacies and supermarkets. Always seek advice before using laxatives regularly.

⚠️ Seek medical advice if constipation lasts more than a week, there is severe abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the stool, or the person becomes increasingly confused or unwell.

💙 How Benopa Care can help

Our carers encourage healthy eating, hydration and mobility, while discreetly monitoring bowel health and reporting concerns promptly. We understand that discussing bowel health can feel uncomfortable, but it's an important part of maintaining dignity, comfort and wellbeing.

👂 Frequently asking people to repeat themselves.
📺 Turning the television or radio up louder than usual.
🤔 Difficulty following conversations, especially in busy places.
📞 Struggling to hear on the telephone.
😕 Withdrawing from social activities.
🔔 Not hearing the doorbell, phone or smoke alarm.

Simple ways to help:

🗣️ Speak clearly and face the person when talking.
🤫 Reduce background noise where possible.
💡 Make sure the room is well lit so facial expressions can be seen.
🦻 Encourage regular hearing tests.
🔋 Check hearing aid batteries and keep hearing aids clean.
❤️ Be patient and allow extra time for conversations.

Helpful products:
✔️ Hearing aids (following an assessment)
✔️ Hearing aid batteries
✔️ Hearing aid cleaning kits
✔️ Amplified telephones
✔️ TV listening devices
✔️ Flashing doorbells and alarm systems
