Not all dogs like other dogs. It is kind of weird when you think about, that we as humans expect our animal to love each dog they see. Yet we don’t feel that way. In fact I feel like there are lots of people I see in coffee queues, ordering food, on school what’s app groups who I just think - WTF is wrong with you? And I actively avoid, try not to interact with them etc!
I got asked this week if dogs can take an instant dislike to another dog. And my reply is yes. I have no scientific backing for this, I just believe it to be true. I’ve seen it happen. I know that other creatures, people and situations can trigger emotions within me so why would it not to our dogs. There are also habitual and historical or experiential reasons why this could happen too so let’s not overlook those. But the reality is, we are all making instant decisions based on what we see, witness, feel and our dogs are not any different. It’s that level of understanding I want to help you have with your dog. Not just a simple ‘my dog doesn’t like something so I tell them off for letting me know’ as that leads to heaps more issues.
Pip and Archie co exist beautifully. They don’t love each other as in they sleep together and play all day. But they like each other’s company, they don’t encroach on each other and they offer each other companionship. Last night Pip lay down after supper and Archie followed. Pip let Archie lay touching him. It’s those kinds of details I look for.
What do you think?
