We are back with our Friday Folklore! 👻 On our recent trip to Scotland, we stayed in the quaint and mystical coastal town of Crail. ⚓️ We popped into the museum and got chatting away with the women working there, who both have a long connection to Crail. They said you must go find the Devil’s Blue Stane, also known as the Blue Stone of Crail. A stone quest? Count us in! 😈 So off we went with some leaflets and merch from the shop (naturally). We got a little lost before our mum pointed to the stone situated right outside the cemetery. But where did this unique treasure get its name and how did it become the centre of Crail folklore?
One popular tale says the Devil was angry at the people of Crail for being boring, dull and too “well behaved” so he attempted to destroy the “boring” town by throwing a huge rock at it! Luckily, his aim was lacking, and the stone ended up on the coast instead. 🪨
Another story involves a local who had a run-in with the Devil. The Devil challenged him to a strength contest, but somehow the Crail native outsmarted the Devil. Frustrated, the Devil threw the stone in a fit.
Some people also believe the stone was put there to protect Crail from evil spirits and bad vibes, keeping the Devil at bay. Alternatively and less folkloric, the stone may have been used as a navigation tool for sailors to find their way.
What do you all think?
