Ownership is not just a certificate on your wall. You need to see a Delivery Order issued directly from the bonded warehouse. This document confirms the cask is held in your name and provides the unique details that tie it to you.

I have spent years in this industry, and if there is one thing I have learned, it is that the paperwork is just as important as the spirit itself. Recently, we have seen more headlines about firms being wound up because they sold casks that simply did not exist. It is a stark reminder that in the world of physical assets, trust is not enough. You need verification.

When you buy a Scotch wh**ky cask, you are buying a tangible asset. But that ownership must be legally sound. A certificate from a broker is a start, but it is not the end of the story. You should be able to trace your provenance and confirm that your name is linked to that specific cask in the warehouse records.

If you are looking into this space, ask the hard questions. Where is the cask stored? How is the legal title transferred? What happens if the broker disappears? If you cannot get a clear, direct answer, walk away. There is no shortcut for due diligence.

Unlike wh**ky resting in oak, wh**ky in a bottle will not continue to mature with age. A 12-year-old Scotch kept for another 10 years remains a 12-year-old wh**ky.

It’s the years spent inside the cask that matter. During this time, the spirit interacts with the oak, developing the character, complexity and flavours that eventually reach the bottle.
