A kebab manufacturer has been fined £500,000 — plus £259,298 in costs — after Swansea Crown Court found it sold products as “lamb” that were actually mostly skin, fat, mixed species and mechanically recovered meat.
The company had misled wholesalers, retailers and consumers over a prolonged period, with the judge calling it “considerable dishonesty”.
One doner labelled as 87% lamb was found to contain only 51% meat and 40% fat .
These products were sold across the UK — including to takeaways and restaurants that market their food as halal — increasing the risk to halal integrity.
When species are mis-declared or adulterated, halal integrity is directly compromised, making halal assurance vulnerable to fraud.
This case is a reminder that:
Food fraud damages public trust.
Accurate labelling and species verification are essential.
Halal assurance requires full transparency, not assumptions.
Halal is built on truth. When that is broken, halal integrity collapses.
