Last July when I was lying in a hospital bed, waiting for ACL reconstruction surgery, I found myself feeling truly grateful. Grateful that I could have the operation. Grateful that, after being hit by a car, things hadn’t been worse. And grateful for the perspective it gave me.
It made me think about people who are in much tougher situations, for example those with life-limiting illnesses and the young carers who support them. So, I decided I needed a goal, something to work towards in rehab, and something that would do some good.
And what did I land on? Well… much to the dismay of my long-suffering physio, Mr. Renshaw, I signed up for an ultramarathon. Not just any ultra—a 60-mile, two-day slog across the Isle of Arran, complete with over 9,000 feet of climbing. Oh, and it would be just nine months post-surgery. Perfect!
The training has been quite the challenge, having gone from never running more than a 10k in my life to running half marathons on my 'easy' days.
So, here we are, less than four weeks to go!! I’m doing this for The Genie's Wish, a charity that grants wishes to adults with life-limiting illnesses and their young carers.
Every donation means the world. If you’ve already donated—THANK YOU, you’re amazing. And if you haven’t yet, I’d love your support. Every penny makes a difference.
Wish me luck and think of me on the 5th & 6th of April as I take on this ridiculous challenge and thanks a million for your support.
