People always talk about being driven because someone told them they couldn’t do it or that they weren’t good enough, that it would never work. I honestly can’t relate to that.
I’ve been really lucky because I’ve grown up surrounded by people who did the exact opposite. If I came up with an idea, however ridiculous it sounded, my family would be the first to say, “Go for it,” and then somehow they’d make it even bigger. “Why stop there? Why don’t you try this as well?” There was never anyone telling me to play it safe.
That comes with its own challenges, because if nobody is putting limits on you, you have to work out where your own are, and I don’t actually think my drive comes from proving people wrong.
I think, if I’m honest, it comes from time.
I have this feeling that life is unbelievably short and there is so much you can do with it if you’re prepared to have a go, and I can still hear my mum saying when we were kids, if we were sat watching telly for too long, “Why are you watching someone else make their dreams come true?” It used to make me roll my eyes, but it obviously stuck.
The irony of me saying that while posting on Instagram isn’t lost on me. We all spend time watching other people’s lives, and there’s nothing wrong with that in moderation, but every now and then I catch myself and think, am I building my own life or just watching someone else build theirs?
Owning a business has taught me that motivation isn’t always loud and it isn’t always about proving a point. Sometimes it’s just quietly deciding that you don’t want to waste the time you’ve been given.
I think knowing where your drive comes from matters because when things get hard, and they always do, that’s the thing you end up coming back to.
I’d love to know, what drives you?
