The first meeting of the working group on confidence-building measures in the context of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, established by LINKS (DAR) in the framework of the European Union initiative EPNK 3, was held in Brussels on 4 and 5 October 2017. The working group seeks to develop the next generation of ideas and measures that may impact positively the process of resolving the conflict, which continues to take a heavy humanitarian, economic and political toll, on Armenians and Azerbaijanis and other nations in the region

Gideon Wakefield has recently visited the Fergana Valley In this op-ed for commonspace.eu published on 21 August 2015 he argues for more EU engagement with what in many respects is the most important part of Central Asia.

Compared to other parts of the former Soviet Union, Central Asia receives little attention in the European Union. A recent decision by the European Council has highlighted the EU’s priorities in th...

8 March is International Women`s Day. We congratulate all women on this day, and particularly those who live in societies where women`s rights are still not fully recognised. This year we want to remember in particular the women activists who promote peace and reconciliation in the Caucasus Region - Armenians and Azerbaijanis, Georgians and Abkhaz, Ossetians and Ingush, and others. Some continue to pay a heavy price for their activism. They are the unsung heroes and we salute them.

We salute the brave women of the Caucasus who over the last decades have defied critics to promote peace and reconciliation. Joseph Alexander Smith has been talking to some of them.

A spokesperson for LINKS said: “Over the next year we will work with partners in the European Union and wider Europe, and in the Islamic world to provide a space for this dialogue, and to contribute towards spreading a message of peace and tolerance and mutual respect. We are also looking forward to conducting research and analysis that will help inform our work in this area. Although this area of work is not new for LINKS, we will be making this work one of our main prioirities for 2015/16.”

Muslims make up a sizeable part of the European population, and Muslim nations are Europe's neighbours to the south and the south-east. Europe's relations with the Islamic world are therefore not t...

“There are no simple solutions to the current stand-off with Russia. The European Union and other western countries need to find a way of containing Russian attempts to put pressure on Eastern Partnership countries and confront Russia’s massive and misleading propaganda targeted at its own population, the populations of the former Soviet States, and the global community. However at the same time Russia needs to be engaged with diplomatically, including on the core issue of the future of European security.” This was stated by LINKS Director Dennis Sammut, speaking at three events held in Brussels and London in December 2014, at the end of a year that has been considered the most difficult and challenging for European security since the end of the cold war.
