But seriously, finding this balance with our little one’s emotions is key for me.
Zero expectations of self regulation but not a fear of the emotion existing.

You are also ALWAYS the expert in what feels comfortable or not for you and your family.

I’m Lucy, mother of 2 and infant sleep specialist. I don’t promote unresponsive sleep training because it’s a real option to not do it if you don’t want to.

Over here you won’t feel bad for supporting your baby to sleep but you will find tips to aid change if you’re needing that too.

Do you want change but also don’t want to make the change?
More common than you’d think!

Short naps?
Regularly more inconvenient than a full problem.
Of course sometimes they could be extended but regularly we are worried just because we’ve been told we should.

If you think it might be feed related you can split the feed by adding in an extra bit around bath time (if you do one).

Another top tip is exploring physical and sensory needs.
Sometimes their body need to expend for energy, get the final wiggles out AND regulate their nervous system through sensory play.
Think rough and tumble, dancing, deep pressure squeezes, (safely) throwing them around.
High energy yes.
Highly regulating and necessary for many for settled sleep also yes!

Sleep pressure being TOO low can exacerbate this issue and is absolutely something to explore if you’re struggling.
This might look like nuding bedtime later or capping a little bit of daytime sleep.
The fact is, there’s only so much sleep your little one can achieve and regularly one is aiming for too long a night and then condensing it makes it more consolidated!

There is no information that is paramount for all.
If you hear something online OR from a paid for professional that makes you extremely uncomfortable and does not align with your parenting values then disregard it.
There is nothing you could do that would prevent you from EVER getting good sleep again.
You never need to do something that just feels wrong to you.

And finally, a huge thing that has shown up in the comments of this footage is the wild survivor bias when it comes to UNSAFE sleep advice.
Just because you did something unsafe or worked with someone who loudly promotes unsafe sleep practices and your baby was fine, does not mean the advice is fine.

We saw an 80% reduction in SIDS when the back to sleep campaign came into play.
Advising you put your baby front down and your baby being fine does not mean the advice is safe.

I am overjoyed that this may be the start of change and that the industry may become more regulated.
As someone who deeply cares about the families I support I am passionate about all parents being able to trust that they can seek support safely!
