Equation delivered the lighting design for Debevoise & Plimpton’s new London headquarters at Northcliffe House.

Spanning 68,000 sq. ft across three floors, the new workplace brings together client-facing spaces, open-plan offices, meeting suites and staff amenities within a considered, high-quality environment.

Our approach focused on visual comfort and performance, with carefully coordinated workplace lighting creating a cohesive scheme throughout the different spaces.

Completed in 2025, the result is a premium workplace that supports the day-to-day needs of the team while reflecting the international profile of the firm.

As part of a series, we’re sharing thoughts and observations from across the team, exploring some of the different considerations that shape our approach to lighting design.

How should a space feel?

It’s one of the first questions to consider when approaching a lighting scheme.

Before thinking about individual fittings or light levels, it’s important to understand the atmosphere you want to create and how people will experience the space. Sometimes that means adding light, but often it’s about knowing where it is not desired. Visual contrast is an ‘old trick’ used to give a space depth, draw attention to key details and allow the architecture to come through naturally.

Colour temperature and adjustable intensity layers of light can then help shape the mood – whether the intention is to create something warm and intimate, calm and understated, or more dramatic.

In this edition, Equation Lighting Design Managing Director Maida Hot shares her view on using light with purpose. Every decision should contribute to how the space looks, feels and is experienced.

The prime workplaces are expected to offer much more than a place to work. Arrival areas, cafés, meeting suites and social spaces are increasingly taking their cues from hospitality, creating environments where people want to spend time.

At Standard Chartered's London headquarters, this look and feel shaped our lighting design approach. Across client-facing hospitality areas, meeting suites, cafés and wellbeing spaces, the lighting responds to the different character and purpose of each setting, moving between more functional and atmospheric layers while maintaining a sense of connection throughout.

It's an approach that recognises that a successful workplace isn't defined by one experience, but by many ✨

At 20 Gresham Street, lighting was carefully considered to support the architectural vision - by integrating the variations of natural light throughout the year, it creates a space that feels inviting during the day while maintaining its character into the evening.

The most successful entrance spaces don't demand attention. They simply feel right.

Nearly 100 years ago, Vladimir Vernadsky's 'The Biosphere' challenged the way we understand our world. His work recognised light not simply as illumination, but as the energy that drives life itself.

He described the biosphere as a network that transforms sunlight into the energy that powers every living system. Without that constant exchange, life on Earth simply wouldn't exist.

While his research wasn't about architecture or lighting design, the principles feel remarkably relevant today.

We now understand that light shapes far more than what we see. It influences our circadian rhythms, wellbeing, cognitive performance and our connection to the built environment. As lighting designers, our role extends beyond meeting technical requirements. It's about creating environments that respond to people, support health and work in harmony with natural cycles.

As our industry continues to embrace human-centric lighting and more sustainable design, Vernadsky's thinking remains a timely reminder that light isn't just something we add to a space. It's one of the fundamental forces that shapes how we experience the world around us.

Light Art | Transforming Spaces Through Dynamic Illumination 🖤

Light has the ability to turn spaces into an engaging visual experience – creating atmosphere, movement and moments of interaction that evolve throughout the day and night.

Through creative design and innovative technology, lighting installations can move beyond static illumination, becoming immersive features that respond to their surroundings and engage with the people experiencing them.

At South Bank Central, a series of suspended spheres creates a striking visual feature, with each element individually addressable to enable complex scenes, subtle transitions and animated lighting effects.

By combining precision control with a sculptural form, the lighting installation creates a dynamic presence within the space – showing how light can become a creative language that enhances place, identity and experience.

Great lighting design is not about removing darkness – it is about understanding how to use it 🖤

Shadow and contrast give spaces depth, atmosphere and character, allowing architectural details to emerge while creating moments of focus and discovery. Without darkness, light loses its ability to shape and define the environment around us.

This approach is particularly important when working with heritage and regeneration projects, where the aim is to enhance existing character rather than overwhelm it with illumination.

At Borough Yards, the relationship between light and shadow was central to the design approach. The regeneration of this historic London site transforms Victorian railway arches, warehouses and public spaces into a vibrant destination, with the architecture relying on contrast to allow the original brick vaults and textures to emerge from darkness.

Equation’s lighting design strategy brought together public realm lighting, exterior architectural accents and interior lighting for the repurposed arches, creating a cohesive experience that respects the history of the site while supporting its new identity.

Successful lighting design is about balance – knowing when to reveal, when to highlight, and when to let darkness do the work.
