Coaching With Chemistry A great relationship is at the heart of great coaching

Who am I? Do I need a "personal brand"?

I recently described myself to a former boss as being like Mary Poppins. His clear recollection was that I was “more like the SAS”. In fairness, during my executive career, I’ve always enjoyed having a slightly scary reputation. I learnt to cultivate it a long time ago when financial services was a different world for women. When a male colleague told me “you don’t have to put your armour on every day”, I remember thinking he was delusional.

I also have a second identity, another version of me, Mentor and Coach. I’ve done my best to enjoy being unrepentantly, uniquely me, and to help others find ways to understand their unique strengths, be themselves and thrive. This version of me isn't scary at all.

Themes of identity, who we are in relation to ourselves, to each other, and to the organisations we work in, have long been something I am fascinated by. But, the idea of having a “personal brand” makes me 🙄, as you can see.

That said, being able to understand and tell your story, and being able to communicate it in a way that helps others help you, is incredibly valuable. If you’ve ever wondered about working with a coach, this is a great topic to start with.

Coming to you LIVE!

I’m excited to announce that Coaching With Chemistry is now live. Our doors are open for business. It's been an incredibly busy few months but to celebrate this milestone, and in keeping with the 'live' theme, I thought you would enjoy a very special treat. My first attempt at creating a video. 😊

Over the next few months, I will be working with our fantastic community of coaches, to roll out a programme of free coaching events, including group coaching and speed coaching (truly we think it’s a thing). And of course, we will be working on some more informational and educational videos. 🤣

For those who haven’t heard of us yet, at Coaching With Chemistry we aim to make it easy to find the right business coach. We use data and AI to match clients with coaches by predicting if they will have coaching chemistry. If you are looking for a coach, or you know someone who is looking for a coach, please check us out.

Finding a coach is a nightmare.

Business coaching is dominated by individual practitioners. A whole world of coaches who subscribe to different schools and methodologies. Clients largely know very little about coaching schools and methodologies, making it difficult to know which coach may be best for them.

However, there is a common factor, which indicates whether clients find coaching effective. The common factor is the quality of the coaching relationship, the rapport or chemistry between client and coach.

So, I had an idea. I wanted to see if I could predict coaching chemistry as a way of helping clients find the right coach for them.

Some coaches I know believe that they can coach any client and they can flex their style to fit any coaching relationship. I, on the other hand, am aware that I am capable of flexing my style to a degree, but I’m a Myers Briggs ENTJ every day of the week. Putting me at the more challenging end of the coaching spectrum, and I know I may not be the right fit for some. As one client put it, “more carnivore than herbivore,” and he meant that in an entirely positive way!

Over the last few months, I’ve built a community of independent coaches, and we’ve recruited some friendly clients to help us experiment with the idea. The early results have been extremely encouraging.

Both clients and coaches have valued being introduced to people from outside their immediate network. One client reported, “I think this was an unexpectedly good match. We had very different backgrounds, but it felt like we could connect pretty quickly”. Our coaches have also valued being part of a community and working together to collectively offer clients what they need. One coach told me “being able to connect in this way is a unique concept that means coaches and clients can get into deep conversations from the first meeting.”

We believe we have enough momentum now to share the idea more widely. If you’re a coach and you’re interested in joining our community, register your interest by visiting our website:
