Who am I? Do I need a "personal brand"?
I recently described myself to a former boss as being like Mary Poppins. His clear recollection was that I was “more like the SAS”. In fairness, during my executive career, I’ve always enjoyed having a slightly scary reputation. I learnt to cultivate it a long time ago when financial services was a different world for women. When a male colleague told me “you don’t have to put your armour on every day”, I remember thinking he was delusional.
I also have a second identity, another version of me, Mentor and Coach. I’ve done my best to enjoy being unrepentantly, uniquely me, and to help others find ways to understand their unique strengths, be themselves and thrive. This version of me isn't scary at all.
Themes of identity, who we are in relation to ourselves, to each other, and to the organisations we work in, have long been something I am fascinated by. But, the idea of having a “personal brand” makes me 🙄, as you can see.
That said, being able to understand and tell your story, and being able to communicate it in a way that helps others help you, is incredibly valuable. If you’ve ever wondered about working with a coach, this is a great topic to start with.
