Vicente Wolf's collection began with a piece of advice from his friend Richard Avedon: 'You should start collecting photography because it’s the thing of the future.'

Beginning with Italian Futurism, Wolf’s interests expanded over time to the Russian avant-garde, Surrealism and American Modernism as he continued looking, learning and trusting his own eye. The result is a collection shaped as much by curiosity and emotion as connoisseurship, one that reflects the same sensitivity to beauty and unexpected juxtapositions that has defined Wolf’s celebrated work as an interior designer.

At home in New York, Wolf reflects on a lifetime spent looking at and living with photography, and why certain images continue to resonate decades later.

In 1968, Mark Rothko experienced a life-changing medical episode. His doctor told him he needed to change four things to improve his health: stop drinking, stop smoking, clean up his diet and paint nothing larger than 40 inches.

‘He did one of the four’, says art advisor Andrew Fabricant.

From 1968 until his death in 1970, Rothko made hundreds of paintings on paper, primarily under 40 inches. He personally chose a select group of these paintings to be shown and sold during his lifetime. Of these, ‘Untitled’ — with its fiery reds, pinks and slash of white — is an exceptional example. Notably, Rothko used acrylic, a newly-adopted medium in his oeuvre, which allowed him speed, freedom and layers of luminosity. The result was profound.

In this conversation between Fabricant and Kat Widing, Senior Specialist, Post-War and Contemporary Art, discover the story behind a vital work made during Rothko’s final years.
