Something to watch!

The Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption in 2010 caught many people off guard and resulted in severe disruption to air travel across western and northern Europe for a week. Europe has other volcanoes that are active and occasionally disruptive but one with the potential to cause serious problems is the Teneguía volcano in the area of Cumbre Vieja on the Canary Island of La Palma.

Resilience First, in partnership with Facebook and Russell-Cooke Solicitors, has published a new resource on 'Re-emergence - A guide for SMEs'.

This Guide is a very practical first step in the journey to building small business resilience, with strategies around business recovery and how to survive and thrive as an organisation. It details the eight pillars of business resilience: Prepare, People, Process, Patrons, Profits, Place, Promotion and Practice. Each of these pillars consists of an overarching goal, a checklist of key considerations and an opportunity to reflect and create actions to evolve the business for successful re-emergence.

Register for our latest webinar, in partnership with the The Fire Protection Association, on Lessons Learnt for the Built Environment from the Grenfell Tower Fire, taking place on Thursday, 23 September 2021, 3pm to 4pm BST.

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry was created to examine the circumstances leading up to and surrounding the fire at Grenfell Tower on the night of 14 June 2017. Changes to building regulations have already come into force following the tragedy. However, it is important to explore further the ramifications for the built environment, including reputational damage to the sector, in order to address and ensure ongoing improvements and safeguards are in place to progress standards of and safety in buildings.

This session will allow our joint members to consider what else the sector could do to advance best practice and standards across the industry and the communities in which they operate.

Speakers:

Su Butcher, Director of Communications Consultancy, Just Practising Limited (Chair)

Dame Judith Hackitt, DBE, FREng, FIChemE, FCGI, Chair, Make UK and former Chair, UK HSE

Howard Passey, Director of Operations, The Fire Protection Association

Terence Short GIFireE, Principal Fire Safety Advisor, City of London Corporation

The case of Gina Coladangelo’s appointment as a Non-executive Director (NED) at the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) by the Rt Hon Matt Hancock MP has hit the headlines recently. Besides the personal drama, the situation has raised general questions about the role of and the type of advice they give and senior executives.

NEDs should be there in major public-, private- and voluntary-sector organisations to offer advice as well as ask those challenging questions that put key decisions under the spotlight in order to help ensure the right outcomes. More often than not, the role and advice are of value but sometimes the challenges are misplaced or absent with serious results. What can be done to help improve the situation?

The pandemic has heightened the importance of strengthening corporate resilience. However, company collapses pre-Covid such as Carillion, BHS, and Thomas Cook, illustrate persistent shortfalls.

Corporate failures have highlighted the need for scepticism from NEDs and the need to shift from a defensive point of view to one that is more agile and proactive.

Aon and PENTLAND ANALYTICS LTD have published a report titled ‘Respecting the Grey Swan’ which details the impact that crises have on reputation and shareholder value. This document is the successor to a decade-old research that is still often quoted by resilience and business continuity professionals.

The latest report by one of the original authors, Dr Deborah Pretty, analyses data from 300 corporate crises from the last 40 years and identifies key lessons learnt. It categorises crises into three sorts and examines their impact on shareholder value while identifying the drivers of recovery. There are Black Swan events (unprecedented, unimagined), Grey Swan events (conceivable but neglected) and White Swan events (reasonable frequency, inherently preventable). Examples given of the Black Swan are the First World War and the October 1987 stock-market crash. This report focuses, however, on the Grey Swan.
