What’s the question you keep pushing to the bottom of the list?

This September, we’re creating some room for those bigger questions.

Bring the challenge, decision or ambition you’re currently working on and spend the morning exploring it alongside women with completely different experiences of their own.

On the agenda:

🔹 An honest in-conversation with Suna Marfé () and Lucy Kane (), sharing the decisions, setbacks and moments that shaped their careers (including the parts that rarely make it onto LinkedIn).

🔹 Three expert-guided workshops with Jude (Judith) Faultless, Katie (Catherine) Lovatt, and Sandra Porter (FCIPD) where you’ll share experiences, test ideas and hear perspectives that might never have crossed your path otherwise.

With summer holidays winding down and calendars filling up again, September can feel a little like a second start to the year (only with considerably more holiday catch-ups and fewer well-meaning resolutions). And at this morning’s first Business Breakfast back, there was definitely a sense of easing into things, with familiar faces returning, new introductions being made and, fittingly, a change of scenery too as the Chamber joined the recently relaunched .

Of course, getting back into the swing of things also means the return of presentations, meetings and those slightly higher-pressure moments, which made today’s conversation with ICF-accredited coach and former drama teacher Gemma Page particularly well timed.

Beginning with a feeling almost everyone could recognise - that moment before an exam when your brain knows what it needs to do while your body has other ideas - Gemma started with one reassuring reminder: your breath is your best friend.
But knowing that when the nerves arrive is only half the story; by practising breathwork when we don’t need it, slowing down, grounding ourselves (and keeping those shoulders back), we’re far better placed to call on it when we do.

So, with the body a little calmer, attention could turn to the voice we all know too well: that inner critic worrying about judgement or getting things wrong. Gemma’s reframing? Shift the focus away from yourself and back towards what you’re actually there to do - help, serve and communicate something to the person in front of you.

And with our autumn return now officially underway, there’s another opportunity (and early start!) to add to the diary: we’ll be back for our next Business Breakfast on 8th October, this time returning to Kingston town centre at TownSq for a morning of coffee, conversation and a little time away from the inbox.

When did you last make time for the bigger question - not what's next on the list, but what's next for you?

It’s easy to spend so much time responding to what’s immediately in front of you that the bigger questions – growing a business, taking the next step in your career or simply deciding what comes next – keep getting pushed further down the list.

This year’s Forum is designed to give those questions some proper attention, beginning with an honest in-conversation featuring two accomplished business leaders - Suna Marfé, (Executive Director, South Thames Colleges Group) and Lucy Kane (Owner and Founder, Time & Leisure Magazine), sharing the decisions, setbacks and moments that shaped their careers (including the parts that rarely make it onto LinkedIn).

The discussion then moves into three expert-led workshops, each tackling a different part of working life:
🔸 Katie (Catherine) Lovatt (Trustee, Kingston Giving) explores reframing success and recognising personal strengths
🔸 Sandra Porter (FCIPD) (Director, The HR Dept North East Surrey, Kingston & Wimbledon) looks at owning your worth in pricing and negotiation
🔸 Jude (Judith) Faultless (TEAM Director, MyBigSky) turns to motivation, resilience and finding joy at work.

We will then round off the Forum over Prosecco and lunch, giving you the chance to continue the conversation: revisit the idea you didn't quite finish exploring, swap details with a new connection, or simply compare notes before heading back to the day-to-day.

Join us for this thoughtfully planned day and enjoy good company, active learning and honest conversations.

While we don’t want to complain too much about some much-needed rain, today’s downpour did have the unfortunate timing of coinciding with our latest Coffee & Connect. Still, it clearly wasn't enough to keep anyone at home, and by mid-morning another sold-out crowd had made their way through the rain and into the (looking, understandably, rather more interested in the coffee than usual).

So once umbrellas had been dealt with and everyone had settled in, the discussion could properly begin with pastries, introductions and – appropriately, as it turned out – a conversation about the experiences we create. Because, as today’s speaker Nathan Bisnouth, founder of WITHIN, reminded us, businesses are shaping them all the time: through every interaction with a client, an employee or the wider community we serve. The challenge, then, is how much of that happens intentionally – and to do that, we first need to understand who we’re creating it for.

It was an idea Nathan handed over to the room, inviting attendees to think about their own audiences, their needs and motivations, and what they ultimately want them to experience. But putting that intention into words also raised the slightly trickier matter of what happens in practice, because knowing what we want our audience to experience is one thing; knowing what they’re actually experiencing is another. And as conversations moved around the tables, that gap between the two brought us naturally to assumption versus evidence: how often are we actually asking, listening and checking that what we think we’re creating matches what people are actually experiencing?

So if this morning has left you with a few things to think about (or you're looking for more opportunities to join the discussion), you won’t have to wait too long: we’ll be back bright and early next Thursday for our Business Breakfast, with another roomful of local businesses to meet and some dedicated time to step away from the day-to-day and work on your own.
