Right now, the average page load time for web shops is 15 seconds. Not sure what yours is? But if it's longer than 4 seconds, 88% of your customers have already left. So, no matter how exquisite your shop looks or how excellent your product is you have already lost the customer and the sale. Maybe it's time to reconsider?

You can take solace in the fact that you are not the only one with this problem. Who knows, maybe your main competitor is doing even worse? But if you are like me, I like to know that I have given my customers the very best of experiences. This is not!

To do something about it, we first need to understand how it happened. Because, I am sure this was never your intention or any ones for that matter. New possibilities and more shops than ever coming online, has led to an eCommerce arms race of great looks and snazzy functionality. Not really sure what came first, but today customers expect the best of the best. So much so, that the average web page has doubled in size in just the last 5 years. Connection speeds have not followed! With more smartphones coming online everyday, mobile networks can no longer keep up. Surfing the web from a fancy new smartphone is just as buggy and slow as it was 5 years ago. The fact that 100mb has become the new normal for fixed internet has made the mobile speed problem even bigger. Despite all talk about 5g - in many years, when the roll out has finished, I am sure we will still have this problem:-(

2. Unfortunately, customer reviews do not provide the full picture and can be misleading. Use your own best judgement and choose what fits your business.

Dealing with themes is hard enough. Unfortunately, life as an online entrepreneur is complex. All e-Commerce systems, use apps, widgets or whatever you call them. They must be factored in. Because each time you install an app it affects your shop. Not only is there a performance penalty ranging from 1 second to several minutes for each app you have installed. Some apps might cause even the best of themes to break or misbehave. You need to be vigilant!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗽?

As opposed to functionality that is part of the theme, apps inject functionality into an existing construction. Because apps must work with all themes, they need to be generic. - That is take more situations into account than one built specifically for your theme. Most often this means, that functionality obtained through an app is slower and more clunky. It also means that the code needed is up to 4 times bigger than it otherwise has to be. This adds to the page size and adds to the time it takes for pages in your shop to load. Running a shop without any apps is probably not feasible, but you need to limit the number to an absolute minimum. Here is how you should think about apps.

Let's take the example from before where we used the Label theme. We know that the Label theme has a page load time of 3.3 seconds without apps. Each time you add an app you should add 1 second to the page load time. That is:

Dealing with themes is hard enough. Unfortunately, life as an online entrepreneur gets even more complex. Like all other e-Commerce systems, the use of apps, widgets or whatever you call them must be factored in. Because each time you install an app it affects your shop. Not only is there a performance penalty ranging from 1 second to several minutes for each app you have installed. Some apps might cause even the best of themes to break or misbehave. You need to be vigilant!

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗮𝗽𝗽?

As opposed to functionality that is part of the theme, apps inject functionality into an existing construction. Because apps must work with all themes, they must be generic. - That is take more situations into account than one built specifically for your theme. Most often this means, that functionality obtained through an app is slower and more clunky. It also means that the code needed is up to 4 times bigger than it has to be. This adds to the page size and adds to the time it takes for pages in your shop to load. Running a shop without any apps is probably not feasible, but you need to limit the number to an absolute minimum. Here is how you should think about apps.

Let's take the example from before where we use the Label theme. We know that the Label theme has a page load time of 3.3 seconds without apps. Each time you add an app you should add 1 second to the page load time. That is:

𝟯 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿

We all tend to doubt ourselves and think of our peers as better than us. What if I told you how to spot if your competitor is really a loser instead? Gloating is so much better than envy:-)

𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗼𝘄:

𝟭. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗲𝘁𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗿 𝗶𝗳 𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗮 "𝗦𝗽𝗶𝗻-𝗮-𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲"

Unless your customers are 14 or younger, having a Spin-A-Sale will decrease your conversion rate and loose you sales. Promoted as a way to engage customers and increase sales, it actually disrupts the sales journey and builds up to a discount instead. If you manage to keep the customer in the shop all the way through to the sale you will - at least - have lost the discount. On a product with a low profit margin this could mean a net-loss. Since what you get in return is nothing but an email! Something that you also would get if the sale went through! Like you, I prefer to have both the sale and the email.

Sales popups are promoted as a way to build trust and increase conversion rates. In reality they probably do the opposite. Personally, I am all for, using product reviews and urgency triggers (e.g Only 1 left!) to push a sale. But Sales Pop's happen in the periphery and force the customers eye away from the Call-To-Action. Giving shoppers information they aren't looking for, isn't good business.

If he can afford it, he can offset some of the problem by advertising more. But since both Google and Facebook price their ads based on how fast your landing pages load! We know he is paying two, three maybe even four times more than us for his advertising. Well that's money in the bank for you.
