Romanian Cultural Institute in London

Romanian Cultural Institute in London We promote Romanian culture and artists in the United Kingdom. These four principal functions are executed in a whole series of activities.

We are keen to build partnerships with British cultural organisations and support our vibrant community in Great Britain. The Romanian Cultural Institute in London, or ICR/RCI London, is part of a global network of cultural institutes and together we make up Romania’s main arm of cultural diplomacy. We act on several levels: as a diplomatic mission, cultural management unit, artistic and PR agency

and as a centre for research and documentation. As a diplomatic mission, we are in charge of cultural and public diplomacy projects, managed by a dedicated team of professionals. We are also responsible for creating long-term partnerships between Romanian and British individuals and institutions. We devote equal energy to initiatives about Britain for Romanians and we collaborate with Romanians in the UK on community projects.

Simona Nastac is one of the 4 featured Romanian poets in this year's European Poetry Festival (EPF).

This participation marks a historic milestone in our collaboration with the festival: for the first time in its nine-year history, EPF highlights Romanian poetry in a specially dedicated event.

SIMONA NASTAC is an art curator and poet, author of The Depressing Colour of Honey (Tracus Arte, 2017) and winner of the “Alexandru Mușina” Prize for debut poetry. She writes with brevity and precision, stripping language of rhetoric to test, at the scale of daily life, whether reality can still be lived in. Her work has appeared in journals including Harana Poetry, Tears in the Fence, Apricity Press, and Black Bough Poetry. In 2016, she initiated the Experimental Poetry Night within the Bucharest International Poetry Festival, which she curated until 2019. She is also the author of Polyphonic, a poetry and moving image project presented at major festivals and venues such as the Brussels International Poetry Fest, Haus für Poesie Berlin, and StAnza International Poetry Festival in St Andrews.

The talented young performers of Acting Up Bucharest are bringing William Golding's "Lord of the Flies" to the FUSE International Festival in Kingston.

📅 Thursday 2 July, 7:30 PM
📍 Arthur Cotterell Theatre Main, Kingston

A timeless story with striking contemporary relevance, this adaptation explores themes of violence, bullying, and the fragility of social order. As the line between play and reality begins to blur, what starts as a game evolves into a disturbing portrait of how quickly innocence can give way to cruelty when rules, structure, and accountability disappear.

Through an energetic and thought-provoking performance, Acting Up Bucharest invites audiences to reflect on the darker aspects of human nature and the forces that shape individual and collective behaviour.

Don't miss this compelling production by one of Romania's most dynamic teenage theatre groups! More info and tickets in comments.

Dr. Cristina A. Bejan's "Intellectuals and Fascism in Interwar Romania: The Criterion Association" offers an in-depth analysis of Romania’s intellectual life in the 1930s, focusing on the influential Criterion Association, which brought together figures such as Mircea Eliade, Mihail Sebastian, and Petru Comarnescu. The book examines how fascism, particularly through the influence of the Iron Guard, attracted part of the cultural elite, leading to ideological and personal fractures. Based on contemporary sources, the work highlights the fragility of democracy in the face of ideological radicalization.

Join us for an engaging conversation on the vibrant yet deeply divided intellectual landscape of 1930s Romania, featuring the author and Professor Marius Turda!

It was a joy to welcome a group of international students and their teachers from Southbank International School to the Romanian Cultural Institute in London today.

Eager to learn more about Romania’s rich history and vibrant culture, the 13-year-old students explored our Belgravian residence and discovered its fascinating history, learned about the Institute’s programme of events, and engaged in lively conversations about Romania’s historical past, cultural heritage, and contemporary artistic life. We were equally delighted to learn about the students’ own diverse cultural backgrounds.

One of the highlights of the visit was the opportunity to interact with Daniel Balanescu’s exhibition. The students enthusiastically contributed their own drawings on the used train tickets provided by the artist, becoming part of the creative dialogue inspired by Running Man. Their creativity and curiosity brought an extra dimension to the exhibition and made the experience all the more memorable.

It was wonderful to see both students and teachers so engaged and excited by the many discoveries made throughout the visit. Many thanks to Louise Carey from Southbank International School for initiating this inspiring encounter. We look forward to welcoming more young explorers of Romanian culture in the future!

What does it mean to leave home? And what is the true cost of building a life somewhere else?

Whether you're Romanian or not, "The Emigrants" is a story that will feel familiar to anyone who has ever lived between two worlds.

A supermarket basement in Germany becomes the stage where two men — a labourer who left for money and an intellectual who left for freedom — share the same room and the same loneliness.

In this forced coexistence, every conversation, every joke, and every glass becomes a mirror of their own conscience. Fundamental questions arise naturally: What is the price of homesickness? How much does hope cost? Sławomir Mrożek’s classic text, adapted by Sorin Misirianțu, is brought to life with humour, irony, and genuine emotion by actors Ionuț Cucoară and Sorin Misirianțu.

🎭 Performed in Romanian with English surtitles, making it accessible to all audiences.

🗓 Sunday 21 June, 3:30 pm

We are delighted to announce that renowned soprano Nelly Miricioiu will join us this weekend for the launch of the English translation of "Pass:ages", the debut volume by acclaimed mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose. Nelly Miricioiu will take part in a special conversation with Ruxandra Donose and translator Matthew McMillan, sharing reflections on a remarkable artistic career and the enduring connections between music, memory, and storytelling.

Hailed as a singing-actress, Nelly Miricioiu is a Romanian-born British soprano widely regarded as one of the most versatile and compelling opera singers of her generation. Rising to international prominence after winning the inaugural Maria Callas Grand Prix in Athens in 1975, she went on to triumph at the world's leading opera houses, including Royal Opera House, La Scala and the Metropolitan Opera. Her repertoire extends from Mozart and bel canto to Verdi, Puccini and the verismo, to the more modern Italian opera of Respighi and Zandonai, and taking in French and Russian composers too. As Rodney Milnes wrote in Opera Magazine “this extraordinary diva can sing anything and sing it well“. She became especially renowned for her portrayals of Violetta, Tosca, Lucia di Lammermoor, Norma and Anna Bolena, while also playing a crucial role in the revival of neglected bel canto masterpieces through her work with Opera Rara. Often described as an artist who bridged lyric beauty and dramatic truth, Nelly Miricioiu's legacy rests not only on her performances on the world's greatest stages, but also on her fearless artistic curiosity, stylistic range, and unwavering commitment to the emotional heart of every role she interpreted. With a career that spans over thirty years, she continues her work as a visiting tutor, maestra and singing teacher, collaborating with prestigious organisations and artists in the UK and worldwide.
