As we approach the Coronation Bank Holiday weekend, it’s worth taking a moment to reflect on an effective communication tool which has been used for centuries by monarchs, known as the “royal we.” It is also employed in another form by many successful leaders, and is referred to as “partnership language”, namely when we address a problem with a team member using the word “we” rather than “you” so that our message comes across as being less aggressive, and more inclusive. This adjustment to our communication style can definitely reassure our team member, and create a healthier working environment. The playwright, Oscar Wilde, once wrote “There’s only one unforgivable sin in life, and that is to bore other people!” In a world of diminishing attention spans, this couldn’t be further from the truth, especially when it comes to in front of our prospects.

The need to find the right Attention Grabber so that we can engage our audience right from the start of our presentation has never been more crucial. Part of our ability to accomplish this is linked with our preparatory work. What is it that really matters to our audience? What do they need to know?

Here are some tips for creating an impactful presentation right from the start:

· Focus on what is most important / pressing for your audience
· Smile and make plenty of eye contact
· Use a startling fact or arresting statement to hook your
audience in
· Remember that presenting at its best is really good story telling – involve your audience with vocal variety, and the right body language
· Keep your slides simple and highly visual (especially your first one.)
