⛏️ LOT 251 ⛏️

One of the most fascinating pieces in Pelton III is Lot 251, a rare 1878 Silver Forint of Franz Joseph I, struck to commemorate the reopening of the Joseph II Mine at Selmecbánya (modern-day Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia).

Selmecbánya was one of Europe's most important mining centres, famed for its rich silver and gold deposits and home to one of the world's earliest mining academies. This unusual commemorative issue marks the revival of the Joseph II Mine, celebrating an industry that helped fuel the prosperity of the Habsburg Empire.

The reverse bears the inscription "II József nevű altárna Selmecbányán" surrounding the dates 1782 and 1878, linking the mine's original opening with its reopening nearly a century later. Struck at Kremnica, one of Europe's oldest operating mints, this is a highly sought-after issue and a seldom-seen survivor.

Alexander the Great arrives in Susa, 324 BC.

Around the time this striking tetradrachm was minted, the city became the stage for one of the most symbolic moments of his reign.

Once a royal Achaemenid capital, Susa was more than a stop on Alexander’s return west. That spring, it hosted the famous Susa Weddings - a lavish ceremony where Alexander married Stateira II, daughter of Darius III, while 80-100 of his officers wed noble Persian women. The aim? To bind Macedonian and Persian elites and forge a unified empire.

But Susa also marked change and tension. Alexander ordered the return of Greek exiles, enrolled Persian youths (Epigonoi) into his army, and introduced Persian court rituals - reforms that unsettled many of his Macedonian followers.

Soon after, he moved on to Ecbatana and then Babylon. His ambitions for further eastern expansion would never be realised. In June 323 BC, aged just 32, Alexander died unexpectedly - leaving behind an empire without an heir, and a legacy that would shape the ancient world for centuries.
