Two mind blowing days at and , Paris:

+ Robotics and Humanoid Robotics are taking off. What an incredible community of people. The atmosphere of excitement, daily progress, collaboration and good-natured competition between peers at Machina was something really very special to behold. Exciting times and supremely grateful to have been able to be in the room to experience it 🙏🏻

+ Humanoid robotics haven’t had their Model-T Ford moment yet on design and manufacture but it’s coming, and when it does these products will be everywhere. Non-humanoid robotics are already there, and already invisibly adopted into many homes.

+ “Humans read at 6 tokens per second”. Some real world context vs. LLMs that’s good to know.

+ AI use in certain areas is finally hitting full mainstream use on many metrics. Loveable co-founder Anton Osika explaining to Mark Cuban how 70% of their customers are outside the US and 80% are non-technical / non-engineers using Loveable to create software and digital businesses. A useful reminder that we designers and engineers are not just designing for ourselves (!)

Some technologies don’t just improve care - they change where care can happen.

We’re proud to share some of our recent work with Zedsen on the Zedscanner: a portable, radiation-free breast scanning device that combines electrical capacitance tomography with AI to assess breast density and cancer risk, designed to reach patients in GP surgeries and community clinics.

7TH led product design and development to take an early concept through to design validation of a manufacture-ready device, working closely with Zedsen’s hardware, software and clinical teams, and overcoming some fascinating challenges with win-win design solutions along the way.

DEPLOYABLE STRUCTURES - One of my all-time favourite (patented) mechanisms from the 7TH design archive. Tension and compression working in perfect harmony to pack a whole lot of useful structure into a very small space for our client, with instant deployability. Geometry was designed first with sketches and CAD immediately after a brainstorming session. This first mock-up prototype was then built by hand with spare parts, and shows an unbeatable wow factor that will carry through development into any product you create with this mechanism. Love it!!!

MedTech shows are an amazing place to discover new materials and processes. Two all time favourites: Radial Laser Cut Stainless Tube - Interlocking segments self align and lock tight when pulled. And Stainless Multi Wire Coil - Designed as a high strength, high flexibility tube, it has another mind blowing property. Individual strands can be moved up and down with seemingly nothing to hold them in place. Incredible materials, engineering and manufacture. Step one for ground breaking new designs is knowing these things are possible!

CREATE IN ITERATIONS - I love the development journey this video shows: Experiment > Kitbash > Sketch prototype > Ugly prototype > Vision model > Looks-like-works-like prototype > DFM and Production. Morph was the world’s first foldable wheelchair wheel and it let you get a manual wheelchair in an overhead locker. Sad it’s no longer in production but hope it inspires more crazy ideas! Continuing to use this iterative process in every project we do :)

ONCE UPON A TIME we designed a water bottle that counts how many times you refill. Joseph Joseph’s Dot Bottle was a big hit, and it was always a thrill to see a stranger walking down the street drinking from one of these. Still love the mechanical counter we built into the lid! And It was nice to create a health tracking product that doesn’t use any electronics. The biggest surprise? Seeing it turn up in the Academy Award Winning movie Druk (Another Round)!
