I recommend clients keep a ‘testimonials folder’ – positive and affirming
comments from their clients and colleagues. A quick referral to this folder
gives you a boost you need at critical moments.

If the relationship with your boss is not open and trusting, find one or two
good peers who you can talk to. You need trusted confidantes so you know
you are not alone.

Self-sabotage is a curious thing: have you ever been ‘too busy’ to prepare
for a meeting even though you knew key stakeholders were present,
choosing to prioritise something less important?

I frequently advise clients seeking promotion to starting thinking and doing
as though you have the role now – step up and be it now. How would you
respond to a challenge if you were ‘the FD or CEO now? What kind of
questions would you ask at meetings? In this way, once the role comes to
you, you will feel prepared and be ready.

Taking action however small or ‘imperfect’ fuels motivation. It was good to see the difference with a client this week who was stuck and is now on a roll just because she did something at that moment when she doubted herself.

So take the risk to step outside of your comfort zone and take action however small. It will build momentum just like it did with my client, and your energy will flow back and you will be back on track to succeed.

Lightbulb moments for my clients often come when we focus on the question of identity: not on what they need to do in terms of skills and competencies, but who they need to be. Once this changes, everything changes.

Small is great

I have seen a 35% increase in the number of small private businesses and partnerships that work with me, together with entrepreneurs that want to leave the corporate world and pursue their own business venture or build a portfolio career.

40 is their average age having spent 15–20 years in a particular career path, feel stuck and decide to use their wisdom and take control of their destiny.

Another is the 55+ age group who have had a successful career and are now reflecting on their final stage and asking what’s next?

When you make a significant change, voluntarily or not, there are 5 simple stages we work through together:

WHY? What has led you to this – the underlying motivation that drives you and reveals your background and experience of life .

WHO? Mind-set – who you believe you are and what you are capable of has a lot to do with success

WHAT? Clarity of Vision is key and I spend one day doing a deep dive with clients getting really clear about their vision and how it fits into their whole life not just their career

HOW? A compelling plan that integrates professional and personal goals that motivates you to take action immediately.

This week I am bringing to a close a one-to-one coaching programme for 4 emerging leaders in the property industry. Investing in their continuing success was important to this company.

It has been great to review progress on the goals we agreed 10 months ago and for them to acknowledge how far they have come. They have worked hard and that hard work has paid off - in some cases through a promotion.

In our first meeting almost a year ago we talked about their values and I often ask clients to score how much they live them. For example, it is easy to acknowledge family as your number one value - however if you don't see much of them because of long hours that score can be low and can impact motivation.

In our final progress review I always include a review of their values scores and clients are always surprised and delighted when they see how much their values scores have increased.

Whether that is increased confidence, putting health as a priority, or spending more quality time with family - to see the increase in these always adds great personal value.

Our values are the drivers of our success and when these are aligned with our business succes it brings a level of contentment as well as growth.

Our final conversations this week is a 3-way meeting with each of their line managers who had input into their goals at the beginning. The impact of hearing your boss talk about your success and progress is significant. And being able to set out the priorities for the year ahead and the potential opportunities that lie ahead for them is always motivating.

It has been great working with this talented group of leaders who I know will have a significant impact on the future success of the business.

In your first speech as a leader it is important to show your credibility and for people to get to know who you are – the person behind the position.

A memorable quote from the new SNP leader in his speech was
“To my girls ... this job will at times be all-consuming, but know that there is no job more important in my life than being your dad. You will always, always come first”.

A simple heartfelt message that conveyed this leaders personal values more than other statements could have done - and in a way that everyone could relate to.

The Power of Pause

A client was upset at the changes in her role due to a restructure. We reflected for a while and then we discovered the opportunities that came about because of this restructure.

This change in perspective enabled her to negotiate and agree a role that will fast-track her ambitions, and acknowledges the value she has added to the business over a tough year.

She is now grateful for the change and is very happy it happened.

Sometimes we just need to pause, reflect and observe things from a different angle and we can see the advantages of change and the benefits it brings.
